    i7 860 or X3440?

    Core i7 860(4 / 8HT cores at 2.83ghz) 16gb ram, 4x 1TB w/ hardware raid 10 $199
    Intel Xeon x3440 (4 / 8HT cores at 2.5ghz) 16b ram, 4x 1TB w/ hardware raid 10 $199

Which is better for a VPS node?

    Thank you

I would take Xeon 3440. If the provider has the new Sandy bridge xeons, give it a try. For a small price overhead, you will get a lot better performance.

Xeon 3440. It's built for servers. While the i7 is more of a general chip and doesn't have a specific niche.

Again if they have the new Xeons give them a go. They may be a bit more though as they just recently came out.

I've searched your products and they are by WebNX and I suggest you personally go with the offers below from them.

    Dual CPU Xeon 5420 (8 cores at 2.5ghz) 12gb ram, 4x 1TB w/ raid 10(2TB FAST Space) $229
    or
    Dual CPU Xeon 5420 (8 cores at 2.5ghz) 24gb ram, 4x 450gb 15k sas w/ raid 10 $289

These are physically 8 cores not logically

There are some architectural improvements that came in with Westmere for lower virtualization latency, so E56xx CPU's would be better than the E54xx, E55xx, X34xx, or i7-8xx for building a VPS node. Either that, or go for a new E3-12xx.

they both run Intel Lynnfield architecture so higher clock speed i7 860 would be faster. If you need ECC memory then go Xeon if not i7 860.

Neither - there is already the new generation of Sandy Bridge servers at lower prices, so why take old generation equipments if the performance will be lower then the new generation of processors ?

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
I'd go with Dual Xeon 5420 as suggested by RapidServers.

Sandy Bridge server is a bomb! Just tested few solutions.

    I would take a Xeon X3440

Xeon X3440 looks better for me.
    I'd use it.
