I have set it up on a server before. It's quite easy actually.

If by chance you are using a Cobalt RaQ3, I recently posted the instructions at:

There was an article in the Web Hosting Magazine titled WebTrends v.s. Urchin. Urchin won hands down, very attractive piece of software although I have had no personal experience with it.

If you get a chance, take a look at Webtrends. It has been out for many years and keeps getting better.

Webalizer and AWstats have been around for years and support Linux and Windows. They're both great stats packages.

I would recommend awstats, seems much more detailed than webalizer

Webalizer was good a few years ago, but it simply has not kept up.. If you want an open source solution then awstats would be the way to go.
The commerical solutions vary a lot, but urchin has excellent features that really run rings around awstats

I don't see a big difference between awstats and webalizer ~

They both have: monthly stats, daily stats, hourly stats, search strings, visitors by country, user agents / browsers, error pages ~

I see awstats has the 'days of week' stats that shows the average hits on weekdays (mon to sun) ~

Not a big difference to me, except that the awstats has a more friendly interface that webalizer ~

However, webalizer also have good advantages. I'd say webalizer is at least 50% faster than awstats when producing stats and doesn't spike the server load too much ~

Webalizer does not handle Geo IP stuff nor a number of other features.
It also doesn't know about a lot of user agents as it hasn't been updated in over 24 months.
