This being my first post, I would like to thank everyone for all of the valuable information that has been contributed to this board.

    My Situtation:
I have a site that relies heavily on PHP4 and MySQL with the majority of content being generated dynamically.

After reviewing the posts on this board and Scriptkeeper, I have narrowed my dedicated hosting options to either Dialtone or Catalog. I am leaning towards catalog (price, software).

Since I do not expect to generate revenues for the first 6 months, I would need to get relatively good performance for around $250 per month. After which I would like to be able to scale up my configuration. I expect initial traffic to be moderate, but to steadily increase with marketing. I would also like to offer wireless services in the near future. (I only need around 3-4 IP's.)

    1) Which of the configurations below would offer better price per performance for the heavy use of PHP/MySQL?

    Dialtone: $289
    ==============
650 MHz Pentium III, 256KB cache
    128 MB ECC RAM
9 GB, 10K SCSI IBM Hard Drive
    65 GB of Burstable Traffic

    Catalog: $229
    =============
    Celeron 550
    128MB RAM
    10 GB EIDE HD
    4IPs
    50GB/mo Transfer
    Plesk

    Catalog: $249
    =============
    Celeron 500
    256MB RAM
    20 GB EIDE HD
    4IPs
    50GB/mo
    Plesk

    2) Does anyone currently use the Zend Optimizer on Linux? Does it really work as stated? Does it bog down the processor?

Thank you in advance for any advice,

    Rich

1- For high end MySQL and PHP application, CPU and RAM is the key. Go with as high and powerfulla s possible

2- I currently use Zend on a development server... it does speed up my scripts and it does not bug down the server. I love PHP4 pretty much in fact, compaired to PHP3. Now, if I could only narrow down those incompatibilities with our production servers...

I would say to go with the $249 one. As ram is going to be very important.

Catalog.coms connection is very slow, I would contact them and see what the problem is.

Like JYC said, more the RAM the better perfomance you would get! I would suggest the one with more RAM to!

Are you sure about Dialtone and Catalog

I have heard some bad complaints about both of their networks being slow you may want to check with Rackspace, DedicatedHosting.com, or even DataReturn

    Thanks everyone for your comments.

I would conclude that RAM contributes more to the overall servre performance than the procesor speed or the type of hard drive.

I will definitely contact Catalog to see what is up with the connection speed and I will post their response.

I will also try some pings on my own.

    Thanks,

    Rich

What is considered a good ping number?

Here are some of my results from a 56K/Win98 connection:
    catalog.com:
    1) Minimum = 236ms, Maximum = 250ms, Average = 181ms
    2) Minimum = 221ms, Maximum = 240ms, Average = 227ms
    3) Minimum = 221ms, Maximum = 310ms, Average = 257ms

    rackspace.com:
    1)Minimum = 206ms, Maximum = 246ms, Average = 228ms
    2)Minimum = 210ms, Maximum = 230ms, Average = 215ms
    3)Minimum = 195ms, Maximum = 210ms, Average = 204ms

    dialtoneinternet.net:
    1)Minimum = 210ms, Maximum = 212ms, Average = 211ms
    2)Minimum = 172ms, Maximum = 190ms, Average = 183ms
    3)Minimum = 195ms, Maximum = 208ms, Average = 203ms

From your poitn of view, all these hosts will be approximately as fast...
However, to do a realy speed test, dont simply ping (that shows the speed at wich the host replies) but try downloading a 1 mb file or ask someone to do it for you with a fast connection.

    The fastest wins

If I recall ping time can be affected by system load.

    dedicatedhosting.com

    Ping Results

    1) Minimum = 196ms, Maximum = 682ms, Average = 319ms
    2) Minimum = 195ms, Maximum = 214ms, Average = 201ms
    3) Minimum = 180ms, Maximum = 284ms, Average = 227ms

I would also like to try Félix's suggestion about the downloading a 1MB file from a site on each host. I am assuming that pinging from my 56K connection might also have alot to do with my own Dial-up ISP connection.

I wonder if anyone has done this for the various hosting companies and posted the results somewhere.

    catalog.com

I would go with the Pentium III for such demanding tasks, both of which will tax the processor, but I would also get the ram upgraded to 256mb of ram at least. The problem is with catalog.com its expensive to upgrade and should you which to switch to a different system you will have to pay the setup fee all over again. Id invite you to take a look at our server offerings and contact me if you have any questions. Other than that catolog.com is a good provider, although im not sure whats up with their network.

    =====

    Rich,

According to that ping Dialtone Internet has better
results than rackspace and catalog. Also
I am going to let you know that for $39 dollars
more the second server in your post is P3 650?? PHP and SQL are
very, very CPU intensive. Plus a big thing
that is very expensive that Dialtone Internet uses is ECC
memory rather than PC100, ECC will auto fix errors
on the memory that will cause Linux to crash
under heavy traffic load. Plus you can upgrade the memory
    at any time.

I got a friend that has a server at Dialtone Internet
and from the Linux stand point and security he said he is
very happy with their expertise, they support you 24/7 and only
when you break something on the server, you will have to
    pay them to fix it.

As far as speed, you may want to trace route your potential
host from different countries, a good source is tracert.com
http://www.tracert.com/ who has pages to tracert from
different ISP's all over the World. Oh I traced tracert.com
site and I think they are hosted at Dialtone Internet too,
    if that means anything.

My friend has a server at catalog and I would have to say they put their own server on a different connection. Here is a ping of his server from hostinvestigator.com(http://www.hostinvestigator.com/go.asp?page=pinghost)

    Ping Number HostName Response Time
    Ping 1 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 2 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 3 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 4 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 5 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 6 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 7 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 8 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 9 xxxxx.com 125ms
    Ping 10 xxxxx.com 125ms

(By the pay my friends server was at 0.01 CPU usage)

Here is a ping of DI

    Ping Number HostName Response Time
    Ping 1 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms
    Ping 2 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms
    Ping 3 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms
    Ping 4 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms

    Ping 8 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms
    Ping 9 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms
    Ping 10 dialtoneinternet.com 47ms

    Here is rackspace:

    Ping Number HostName Response Time
    Ping 1 rackspace.com 32ms
    Ping 2 rackspace.com 32ms
    Ping 3 rackspace.com 32ms
    Ping 4 rackspace.com 32ms

You should also keep in mind that ICMP packets are automatically deprioritized to the last packet that is processed on a router (or switch (including ATM)) and also with most IP QOS setups.
