    Windows OS choice for VPS

    Hello,

I am currently playing with VPS's and deciding which OS to use.

My main concern is the memory usage.
I am keen to user Server 2008R2 (64bit only), but does it use a fair bit more Ram than Server 2008 32bit?

    Many thanks,
    Dan

I would recommend going 2008R2 as it is the latest and greatest. I haven't compared memory usage specifically side by side on both the mentioned OS's but you shouldn't see a difference.

+1 for Windows server 2008 R2. It does consume bit more RAM but RAM is cheaper these days and it wouldn't be make much difference in costs.

Windows 2008 R2 uses about 500MB memory with IIS & DNS installed.
I would not choose Windows 2008 even if it uses less memory.

Thannks guys. My current home server runs 512mb no problem running server2008 32bit with some asp.net applications. My vps will either be 512 or 1GB and I may run a mail server and more sites on it.
My concern is server2008 R2 being newer will naturally consume more ram plus extra overhead being 64bit?

I would never suggest Windows with less than 1GB, and you'd be safer with 2GB. It costs more, yes, but it's the difference between sluggish/down sites, and sites that are online and peppy.
