Hard reset errors on server
Hello WHT'ers!
On a server that we are running Software RAID 1 with 2x Samsung 840 Pro's in a hot-swappable chassis, we are encountering the following hard reset errors:
[124057.122406] ata1: exception Emask 0x50 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4090800 action 0xe frozen 12:26
[124057.123117] ata1: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed 12:27
[124057.123480] ata1: SError: { HostInt PHYRdyChg 10B8B DevExch } 12:27
[124057.123548] ata4: exception Emask 0x50 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x4090800 action 0xe frozen 12:27
[124057.123551] ata4: irq_stat 0x00400040, connection status changed 12:27
[124057.123554] ata4: SError: { HostInt PHYRdyChg 10B8B DevExch } 12:27
[124057.123558] ata4: hard resetting link
We'e running CloudLinux Server release 6.5 (Pavel Popovich): 2.6.32-458.23.2.lve1.2.45.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Nov 22 08:02:49 EST 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Manufacturer: Supermicro
Product Name: X10SLL-F/X10SLL-SF
Has anyone encountered errors like this? We're thinking it's either due to CloudLinux or potentially a bad backplane.
Thanks!Jon Stephenson

This could be bad backplane or bad SATA cable. Can you post the output of smartctl -d ata -a /dev/<your SSD drive>?

Looks like the drive is in good condition. UDMA_CRC_Error_Count = 0, which means no cable/backplane issues (well, at least for SATA RX/TX signals; this does *not* mean there are no issues with power). I would try upgrading the system's BIOS and kernel. If this does not help, I'd try disabling power saving options.

Awesome - I'll go ahead and give that a try this weekend during an off peak hour. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks!

It could just be the drives barfing at the RAID arrangement. The fact you're getting resets on both drives makes me even more suspect. 840P's are notorious for issues such as this in RAID setups, software and hardware... if it were me I'd swap them out with either 830's or another brand altogether.

I believe we have seen this is "aggressive power link management" enabled in bios, disabling it resolved the issue.

Will second the suggestion about the power link management and checking to see if it's set.
We've run into this issue before ourselves, and just troubleshot an extremely picky and intermittent hardware RAID issue with a customer running Server2008 that turned out to be the PCI Express Link State Power Management setting inside the OS itself. In a nutshell, it would idle out the RAID card, which, as you can imagine, would cause all sorts of issues.GravityServers.com | Fully Managed Cloud Hosting 100% vmWare | Texas, Los Angeles and Seattle

Also, check on the firmware on the drives. Sometimes, drives fall out of raid on certain models if not updated with the latest firmware.

We are having the same problem with same motherboard. Just wondering CompuSite did you ever solve this and if so how?

Hello,
We've ran into this problem when we use those drives (samsung 840 pro) with just about any Intel SATA controller. I have several chassis and chipsets versions and they all fail intermittently under load. Removing and reinserting the drive brings them back for a short time.
So far the only fix I've found is to use a LSI SAS controller. The 9211-8i for example runs solid under load for extended periods of time. I have several LSI SAS versions that are all running well in production.
All of the onboard SATA controllers (other than LSI) I have tested fail at some point under extended heavy load when using those SSD drives. Typical desktop usage doesn't seem to cause any faults, but when we put them in servers and ran them hard for weeks on end they start to pop offline with that error.
Firmware, BIOS, kernels and drivers did not have an impact. I spent weeks on this problem before I found a stable hardware combo. I do not see this problem with Intel enterprise SSD's either, but swapping the controller was much more economical fix.ManagedWay

Thanks for that....Actually I can update this post with my own findings now.
I'm not using samsung 840 pro drives, but I am using the same motherboard Supermicro X10SLL-F. I have added 2 new drives to this server and created a separate RAID1 array and copied data from another of the RAID1 arrays to this new RAID1 array. It seems now that the errors have stopped or at least they have stopped for the last 12 hours.
This seems to indicate there was a problem with one of our own drives. But I will wait another 24 hours to see if the errors return.
Previously I was certain it was the motherboard, but now it appears to be a hard drive causing the problem. Strange because the hard drive is not reporting any errors, seemingly runs fine, has latest firmware??? I will need to run some tests on this drive on a different system, perhaps there is a problem in the sata port or with that sata link only? Anyway at least I seem to have solved our immediate problem for now.Last edited by bjdea1; 06-24-2014 at 08:43 AM.

SSD's tend to have problem with their reliability, so you may be right about the cause.

Over 24 hours and still no errors.......I think this confirms I had a drive issue. Supermicro X10SLL-F motherboard "all ok".

are those spin drives "enterprise grade" such as seagate constellation or WD RAID edition?
if just "desktop" drives such as Seagate barracuda or WD black/blue, then this could well be the symptom caused by high vibration inherent in any rack servers installed in production environment. these desktop spin drives have no anti-vibration mechanism built-in so that they could be easily suffering from erratic behaviors and the eventual "slow death".
