Arrow Hosting Your Own Music Behind a Login

Just curious what obstacles someone will face today in a shared hosting environment if they have copyrighted MP3s they own, but are not sharing with anyone and they are protected behind a login. Is that something the host would not take issue with UNTIL there was a DMCA claim or obvious disregard?

It's okay, when things goes wrong the authority will send you with a DMCA violation notice and usually with a take down notice.

Then you better take it down. DMCA is alright, but when it comes to child porn, I got some sites hosted on my servers years ago when I was still doing website hosting, the FBI even showed up on our front door to serve the paperwork to take down the website and demand everything to be archived and handed over to them.

Cool experience though, never meet these agents in person before, just saw them on TV

Anyways, I don't think you should worry about that.

Ok, thank you. That is good to know. So if I have my favorite Michael Jackson or Metallica or whatever MP3 hosted on a shared account (ex. hostgator, bluehost, godaddy or some random host I found here), I'm not going to have an issue if is it behind a login and I am not receiving DMCA notices?

    Yeah, you should be fine.

Just don't go nuts. Most "unlimited" shared hosts are not really "unlimited"

So I just spoke with Hostgator in their sales chat and they said that shared hosting is not for "personal backup" and I needed at least Level 3 VPS which is $40/month. Are there better options?

(and note, this is not for me but for hundreds of customers that will soon have an app that we will be distributing)

If you need a lot of storage, a customized dedi is usually a good way to go.

The VPS packages are often sliced up based on average requirements, which is not suitable for file hosting.

No, I am looking for a shared host with a reasonable plan that most people can afford easily.

Many shared hosts won't allow usage of their services for personal backup. A lot are oversold, which means they offer you a lot of space but bank on the fact that you won't actually use it- the average website uses something like 50-200mb, if not less.

If a host does allow it, you should be fine as long as it's protected, but if you are served a DMCA notice you'll have to take it down. I'm not sure of the legality of storing it online anyway, seeing as technically it's on the internet. Bit of a grey area.

Best to ask the host first, as well. If they suspect you intend to distribute, they'll shut you down.

How much back up space is needed also hosting companies are concern about when you backup your files that it slows down the servers. You may say I will backup at 2:am for you that may be ok but the person around the world maybe just getting into the office at that time and it is not off hours for him. So there is more to consider than just disk space. Backup servers are use just for that reason, so it would not matter when you back up because no actual websites are on the server.

So, just to understand better, you are looking for a shared host which each of your app purchasers will then subscribe to? Is that right? Or will you be the one with the subscription and just use the hosting to store the app users' music files on?

As mentioned elsewhere, unless this is a really small amount of music, you will have trouble storing this on any shared account - much more so if it's one account with hundreds of users storing music on it.

I'm guessing this is some sort of streaming application for users music (like iCloud) - if so, then I don't see you being able to do this with less than a dedicated server. You won't get the storage on a VPS (or the bandwidth). You would on a cloud server by buying extra capacity on the cloud SAN, but it won't be cheap - Euro100/TBish. A decent sized storage server would seem to be what you need. You can then act as the host selling storage to the user.

Make it clear to the host what you intend to do beforehand so they know what's going on and they (and you) don't get any surprises down the line.

    Hello,
It is perfectly fine, if you are hosting a copy of your music for your personal listening as long as your host allows it. Many hosts disallow file storage, especially the "unlimited" ones.

As far as a DMCA, this should not be possible if your music is password protected, as long as its only you who has the password. The RIAA (or Recording Studio) would need to break into your server to see the music and they simply dont do that,

What do you mean it is not for you but for hundreds of customers? I am a little confused because earlier on you said you are looking to host some of your own personal music files.

Shared web hosting is just that it is intended to host websites. If you need something to host files for an app you are going to want to find something more suited to that. A VPS or a dedicated server. shared web hosting is not intended, generally, as a file server.

Having said that, if it is for your own private music you should be fine. But if it is for your own private music why not use Dropbox or Google Music as they are very good for this sort of thing.

    Hello,
In this case, it cannot be done without a license and royalty fees. This is no longer a personal backup space.

I mean hundreds of users will buy my app, then buy hosting, and then store music files. It might not be a huge number of files (unless they want to upgrade their hosting), but I want to know a safe "starter host" where they will be safe to do this. They probably would need at least 250 mb of storage.

I am not entirely sure what the service is you are offering, but have you considered Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#pricing you get 5gb of storage for free if you are just after storing data/music for your app. It is what Dropbox use as far as I am aware.

Ok, so sounds like I would want to provide instructions to the users of the app how to setup their own S3. Is there a good guide for this somewhere that is easy for an average webmaster to understand?
