    * domain name at host vs registrar

    Hi,

I realize that for some that are less experienced, the fact that you can set up a site with a domain name at a host is not only easy but can save some money from the registering the domain name at a registrar.

What are the pros and cons of not registering the name at a registrar?

    Pros:
Convenient, one stop deal. The host can set up the DNS at the registrar level for you, remind you when it's due for renewal, and you get one bill/invoice for both items. Some will even include the domain with a package deal.

    Cons:
They have control over your domain, usually in the form of having it under their name as admin (at least). They have the password for accessing the name record, and if they vanish, you get stuck with a hassle trying to free up the name. Some (less reputable) hosts will hold your domain 'hostage' if something in your arrangement falls through...

Me? I'd get the name myself...but I'd wind up paying a bit more than the host would (hypothetically speaking, since I have inexpensive reseller accounts at various registrars). You would then have the peace of mind that you are in control of your own destiny. Up to you and your comfort level with your host, though.

After looking at the long threads about featureprice fiasco I don't think buying a domain from a webhost where you are hosting is a good idea.

    Hi Bear and Ithink,

I tend to agree with the both of you but I was thinking about some of the problems that happens with servers going down.
What happens when the server goes down at the registrar?

I also don't like the idea of someone holding my domain name captive.

registrar goes down? doesn't matter much. It is the dns servers that matter. If the root servers went down... everything would be gone... and the infrastructure of the net collapses and everyone is out.
FeaturePrice == Webhost nazis. I will never let a company control my domain again. Never!
www.namecheap.com pay the 8.88 and have total control!

The servers at registrar going down means that you will not be able do changes to your DNS or whois data but as 'bear' noted it will not bring down your site.

Further go for a reputed registrar. I have a large number of domains registered at godaddy and in last one year or so I have never seen godaddy.com being down.
