    Work around for DNS problem

It's relatively rare, but we may have the problem of DNS, like currently we are having with some Canadian major ISPs.
DNS of Sympatico.ca, videotron, and possibly many others are not reolving names.
    Not even Yahoo ....

In this case, we can use the DNS of someone else to go around the problem.
(We can use the "hosts" file, if we only want to access limited number of sites.)

You can do this only if you know the IP address of different and working DNS.
If not, you may have to call a friend or use another backup IPS to find out the IP.

Today, I simply used the DNS of DreamHost, as I know it's working and they shouldn't bother if one of their client use it.

So, only thing we need to do is put the IP in the Setup screen of the router, if you are using one.

Alternatively, you can put the IP of new DNS in the TCP/IP property of your PC.
(You may have to reboot the machine, depending on the OS. Also, be careful not to change unrelated setting.)

Well, I think it's the first time in several years that DNS of major ISP are gone bad like this, and I'm sure most of users are thinking their connection is simply lost.
But the connection is still working and only DNS is failing.
So, we can still use the internet by telling the PC and/or router to use another DNS.

I don't know. They are major providers for eastern Canada.

My ISP (local cable provider) at least fixed their DNS.

It was a problem of that particular day.

I'm not aware of any problem, right now.
(Other than a filer problem at DreamHost and my small local ISP going down for a while following a short power outage.)

It's another peaceful trouble shooting day.
