Question Reselling domain names.... in Australian dollars

Hi everyone. I've been lurking around for a while, and have been absorbing a lot of info from these fora. Sorry to do this, but I have another "I'd like to resell domains" question.

I wish to sell .com/.net/.org domain names (and .biz/.info as well if possible) from my site. The problem is that I'd like to price them in Australian dollars.

I expect the volume to be small, so would prefer no startup costs. A customizable API like Dotster's would be nice, but I'll probably have my own CC processing facilities, so it's not essential.

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

It doesn't seem like it would be any different than the recommendations for domain selling, but instead of hooking it to a U.S. processor and charging in USD, you'd hook it into your processor and charge in Aussiebucks (not meant to make fun, I don't know what the correct term for 'Aussiebucks' is).

Yep what the chook says sounds right because you really are buying wholesale and selling retail. So you buy your domains (often in bulk for discounts) from the registrar (ie, *you* pay the registrar), and you client pays you, and the difference is your beer money. So they are two seperate transactions, unless you use something like registryrocket from enom where they bill the customer for you (but you don't want that anyway because you are going to bill in AUD).

Hehe - Chicken, AUD, is the financial market abreviation for "aussiebucks", Australian Dollars.

Other than that mob in Melbourne who charges like a wounded bull I don't think anyone here runs a reseller system in AUD. We're in the process of putting one together though.

They tried to give it a pet name like the "Greenback" in America. What they came up with was the "Emu" I believe, and that idea sunk under a swathe of laughter. They've just stuck to "Australian Dollars (AUD)" for now.

    Aussiebucks?

Yeah, I figured there's probably not much in the way of plug 'n play API's for Aussiebucks. Editor, if you do develop one, I'd be very interested.

I guess my next question is probably a newbie-ish one - how do I interface the registrar and the payment system together?

Bulkregister and RevEcom are probably the registrar and payment gateway I'll end up using. I'd imagine I'd have to write a script that does a whois check, and if OK, redirect to RevEcom for payment. If payment is successful, Revecom will redirect to Bulkregister who will register it and charge it to MY credit card. If registration fails, I'll have to refund the customer's payment.

Is it something like that or am I completely off the ball?

No...you're quite close to the mark. Though you ought to consider planetpos.com though. Great bunch of lads, down in Melbourne. Tell Arthur I sent you (or ask me for an affiliate link that'll save you a few $$$'s). :-)

We've built a complete host billing and affiliate system that works through PlanetPOS. March at the latest should see the domain system integrated.

    Cheers

Actually "Emu" was not developed as a name for the Australian Dollar it was an early contender for what became the "Euro", standing for "European Monetary Unit".

As for domain names being sold in Australian Dollars, there are more suppliers than the market can support. If you want to get into the industry you will have to do more than just look at this board. For starters, have a look at some of the local magazines such as Internet.au and read Tuesday's Australian IT section religiously so you can get an idea of what is going on. Australian hosting companies targeting the Australian market are not going to quote in $US. Apart from the hosting companies there are a couple of specialist domain name resellers selling internationally in $AUS besides the money sucking monster that once dominated the market.

The original poster was specifically looking for a reseller system, not somewhere to register a domain. That's the way I read into it anyway. There are two that I can think of now but more may come to mind. One being INA/INWW, and one being ClicknGo. Both of which we have dealt with, and neither of which we would never touch again. :-)

Editor, which part of the process did I get wrong? Anyway, I had look at PlanetPOS and fired off an email with some questions (and told them that you sent me ). You'd better stickymail me that affiliate link as I might need it.

Yah, I'd like to resell domains - don't feel up to the task of becoming a registrar just yet . It's not going to be my core business either, but it's something I reckon I would really compliment my other services just by being there. So as long as the prices are reasonable and I'm not losing money, I'm a happy chappy.

Clickngo are of course a low level reseller, although a high volume one. Editor I have seen you selling domains retail for cheaper than what Clickngo are most likely paying wholesale.
    What's your secret hey ?

    Cannonball - PM sent.

DendyDan - I don't talk out of school mate. ;-) No, seriously...we've latched onto a very wholesaler, but it's a very manual system. So until we can integrate a payment system into it we've knocked it back to bulk registrations/transfers for now. We have some domain name junkies on our books, which it suits perfectly.

Are you fellas aware of the the upcoming changes (auDa) to our .au's? We're about to introduce them at a fraction cheaper than MelbIT (probbly only $5 but it's a start). Come March though...the wholesale price hits the $50 mark or so. Then the games will begin. :-)
