Question Is Vps a good choice for my site?

I have a web site. Right now its php. It has about 700 megabytes of photos on it taken by myself and some friends. The hosting has been going downhill so its been really slow, and I can't get ahold of anyone...

Its not a high traffic site, but it needs to have much more HD space (2-3 gigs).
It also needs to allow me to do some basic image processing on occation and execute my php/mysql scipts. As well as imagemagik.

VPS costs a little more than shared hosting for site size, but I would like to give the people that use my site to dump there photos there own accounts and directories, so I'm not always uploading everyones images.

VPS seems like a good fit. Is it? It never seems shared hosting does enough.

I can't quite figure out how much customizing you can do to a VPS.

How much works "out of the box?" and do the hosting companies maintain your setup (patches?) or is that up to you?

Can I change the web server/ web server apache.conf?
Can I customize my php install?
Can I run a java executable (to process images) if I needed to?
Could I run Jboss/tomcat if I decide java is much better than php?
Are all ports open on these machines or just 80?

They seem to offer little information about these things.

I was hoping to keep the cost in the 20$ /month range.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

For a VPS anyou can change all of those things however I think you will need to look at raising your budget as if you are wanting C-Panel as well as that much transfer you will be a lot better off in the $30+ range. For the $20 you would really want to look at a high end shared hosting account

For your budget you're better sticking with some good quality shared hosting, a good server shouldn't have problems opening a picture gallery.

Thanks for the answers. However adding users and functionality that isn't possible on my shared hosting site is what is driving me looking at a VPS. I got a friend to go in with me so at 40$ / month its defenitely doable.

Spend the little extra and go with the VPS...gives you almost all the versatility of a dedicated server but without the big price tag...

I agree with the others, spend the extra money and invest in a nice VPS. They are worth it and it's much better to have that satisfaction knowing that you've got set resources in case they are needed.

indeed. VPS gives you the total flexibility of having all features of dedicated server while paying much lower cost.
