From your experience whice site offers the best service for registering a domain name.
I've heard good things about godaddy.com and stargateinc.com
    can you recommend any others?

I've always been using register.com. They don't have the cheapest prices but have great service and everything always runs smoothly.

If I were choosing between GoDaddy and Stargate; Stargate wins hands down.
GoDaddy has too many extra charges for things that StarGate lets you do for free.
And I have domains at both. But, I don't believe I'll register with GoDaddy again.
There is no best host. There is only the host that's best for you.

I use www.powerpipe.com - about the same price as godaddy, and I've had good experiences with them
