NYC datacenter -- working for free to get hands on experience possible?
hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to work part time at NYC Datacemter(i work in nyc btw ) to get some experience (sys admin etc) before i start offering my own dedi servers/services.
I just would like hands on experience so i can get a full idea of what all is involved. I dont expect to get paid. Or if there is a course offering like sysadmin that teaches you the ins and outs of managing a server.
Do you guys think its possible that a datacenter will even consider my request?
I really appreciate your thoughts on this one.
thanks

it's possible... but you may not like the shift u work.
With my CoLocation Xp, i noticed they my data center hired the most geeky of geeks for there day shift... and just a bunch of warm body's for the night shift. Any by warm bodies... I mean kids that were right our of high school that are there to only handle server reboots and be the "remote hands" of the net ops team that is located in another state.
But the plus sided is... that when ever i needed something done @ 2am... it was done correctly and quickly.

May I ask your approximate age, and if you're in college?
If you're 18+, and especially if you're in college, an internship should not be too difficult to achieve. Otherwise it's a bit harder, but as others have mentioned, still possible.
Wherever you go to school, it's possible that someone in the IT department there may be able to give you a personal referral to a data center in the area. Good luck.

You can almost surely find a paid job then, given your work experience.
I would suggest trying to start with a data center in an administrative or general IT capacity (part-time job?) with an arrangement where you could have significant time on the data center floor.
HostingCon 2008 is coming up next month in Chicago, too. You may want to attend and network, if time permits.

Appreciate your input Mike. Although i have tons of relatives in Westmont/Chicago to stay at --- it might make more sense if i attend hostingCon next year when i am halfway into offering dedi servers.
My webhosting biz is a tad slow -- i am not doing any marketing -- i am personally disappointed since they are so many biz's in nyc -- i should have hit the pot of gold by now :-) -- i really need to work on adv. --- but i am hoping that dedi is the way to go. Capital is not an issue -- i have rich relatives who are more than willing to invest !!
Do PM me your thoughts if you have some time on the weekend :-)
Have a wonderful weekend !!! and HAPPY JULY 4th in advance !!
Regards,
