Just looks like Earth's natural process of change to me. Plates have been smashing in to each other and forcing themselves under each other since the dawn of time.

On the contrary, I'd say it's still quite young. It's been around 4.5 billion years (they estimate) and best estimates suggest it will still be here for another 6-8 billion years (until the sun turns in to a Red Giant). So really, if predictions are to be believed, Earth hasn't even hit middle-age yet.

As for humans abusing nature, I have no doubt we're having an effect and we should do all we can to mitigate that effect but just how much we're effecting it is what really interests me. Afterall, humans in our modern form have only been on Earth for 200,000 years. If my calculations are correct, that means humans have been on Earth for less than 0.0078% of all time. Doesn't that just boggle the mind?!

It gets even more crazy when you consider the percentage of Earth's lifespan that scientists predict life can actually exist. It's a stupidly small percentage. It makes for interesting thought.

albeit that these 'natural occurrences' like this, if happened in greater scale like in the billions of years you speak of, can wipe out entire specie set of the planet and replace it with others.

We are abusing nature too much, unless we take a effective step we'll see our planet fades out slowly.

I really feel the world is coming to an end.
After the earthquake the nuclear reactors have started leaking in Japan.

Also it appears there is a star somewhere in the universe normally bursting every 20 years thats yet to burst after 40 years now. Sure earth will be blown off when the star bursts!
