BurstNet, Nocster - Server Shutdown!
I'm not going talk about bad support service, not willing to replace faulty hardware, etc.
After being BurstNet customer for 7 months my server was terminated without any notification or explanation.
They did it on July 9, Friday at 10:40 PM EST. I was out of the city and when I came back on monday I got very interesting email from them:
Due to the history of abuse and on going abuse on this 'bn.***********' server.
We have opted to terminate this server, effective immediately. This termination applies to: bn.affiliateplex.com
Abuse Department
BurstNET Technologies, Inc
I hosted free blog service on that server and occasionally got C&D letters from copyright owners to remove pages with links to torrent/rapidshare. I always handle such abuse reports within 24 hours and remove such material. No hosting illegal material, no spamming, noting illegal.
I've open support ticket and ask them to give me more details and access to server/HDD to backup data.
24 hours later - still no reply.
I've called them, they told me that they will answer to the ticket as soon as they can. Ok.
After few hours they reply. Below our conversation:
Hello, again.
Thank you for providing your pin. It has been verified.
Bn.xx*********** was terminated by request of law enforcement officials, due to material hosted on the server.
We are limited as to the details we can provide to you, but note that this was a critical matter and the only available option to us was to immediately deactivate the server.
The following section of our Service Agreement Contract (https://www.burst.net/policy/contract.pdf) addresses this type of issue:
.....
.....
In this case you could suspend the server and contact me regarding this matter. And I'm always responding to abuse report within 24 hours and remove copyrighted material, etc.
I need access to the server to backup important data.
I'm sorry for the delay. I have been awaiting a response regarding this issue from one of my colleagues.
Please note that this was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm. This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server.
The pre-payment for invoice #1289289 (bn.xxxxx***********. (07/11/2010 - 08/10/2010)) has been credited back to your account.I need access to the server(or hard drive) to backup important data.Ok, give me contact information of law enforcement officials if you cannot give me more information about this.
You've deactivated the server without any explanation and saying that you cannot give me the details and access to my data because of some "super secret" law enforcement officials?!
Still waiting, 12 hours and counting.
So BurstNet can "kill" your server any time and give you BS reason about some "law enforcement officials".
And the interesting thing they credited money back to my account not credit card, so they expect me to spent more money on their services?
Unfortunately I have only database backup, but not files on server - my fault.
I never expect such unprofessional actions from hosting provider to long-term customer and lost part of my business.
Conclusion:
- Backup!
- Stay away from BurstNet/Nocster at any cost!1

From what I'm reading your server was terminated by request of the authorities. Companies do not generally just terminate servers without good reason and in this case I'm guessing they had a very good reason. I'm going to side with burst.net on this one as the risk of not terminating you would be much much worse for them

We notified him when we terminated it, and we refunded him his money to his account, becasue he has other servers with us. If he wants the refund to his card, we can easily do that. However, it should be the least of his concern.
Simply put: We cannot give him his data nor can we provide any other details. By stating this, most would recognize that something serious is afoot.
As far as his request to speak with the law enforcement officials, he sent it last night at 7PM, after Customer service was closed. We are looking into his request with the necessary persons.
This is the last post we will make on this subject.Last edited by BurstNET_CSM; 07-14-2010 at 09:21 AM.

I know of a few specific issues which will cause this type of action and none of them will end well for the OP...

This may be stating the obvious, but did you have a backup? (remote backup etc...) if so then you're fine, but by what seem to be saying, you haven't. Also if what burst.net is saying is true, then maybe you should be considering what could potentially happen in the near future.
I hope this all gets sorted and things work out nicely for you.0

Did you monitor every WordPress blog you hosted? It sounds like child pornography was found on one of the blogs, that usually warrants a very swift response from authorities which would also explain why they cannot give you back the data.
It's unfortunate and extremely disgusting, but that's what can happen when you offer free hosting of sorts to people. It will be abused and in the end it's your responsibility to do as much as possible to prevent it.0

I think that is not justified, not what, and had no right to suspend services has not yet warn all. You have suffered losses, you must pay them. Urgent need to start working with a lawyer. The site did not see why not illegal, I think it's nonsense. I have already encountered such hosting, the price of penny, I would recommend now to lay out all the server situation, for all to see and read. And hosting the immediate resumption of work, but I think it lies, they just lost information, and such methods want to get rid of the client. If in the near future do not resume service for which you pay must immediately write about them in all services. Personally, I'll hold you, because I'm used to such arrogance with hosting parties, and boldly put its worst.

all right if there was illegal material you were to say, you would have removed it all. And do not you stop all services. What kind of hosting such which does not care about customers.
We live in the 20 century and not in the 18 century when everything should be solved with a baton. It was necessary to warn you, but you do not have to view each page of your web hosting because it is simply not realistic. Please provide all the information on this hosting, for all the forums. I do not want to scorch with this service and want to show people how they are received.

All problems solved. The easiest method is to STOP service - A DEMOCRACY WHERE ??????? Where law and where respect for the client?
Who needs a hosting service that does not fight for their clients! My words do not, we like all adults and solve a small problem we can not.0

Have you considered they were instructed by the authorities to keep their mouths shut? When the feds are doing an investigation they dont always just say "here is my card, have so-and-so call me for all of the details on our ongoing investigation so he can start destroying the other evidence we are going after."
