Question My First Dedicated... Need Help Choosing.

Well, I'll make this short and sweet, a friend and I are finally investing in a dedicated server and I guess I need help choosing one. Here are the things it had to have:

    > At least a P4 or compatible processor.
    > Ensim as its control panel.
    > Preferably under $200, better if it's under $150.

So here are the choices I found based on searches from WHT.

    FastServers.net (Started at $158, Configured to ~$200)
    P4 3.0 (w/HT and 800Mhz Bus), 512MB RAM, 120GB IDE
(What discouraged me about this was the high setup charge, and the fact that it makes no difference whether you pay monthly or yearly.)

    Ev1 ($189)
    P4 2.4Ghz, 2x80GB HD, 1GB RAM
($1 set-up charge, and not a bad monthly either, but I've seen VERY mixed reviews about them as of late.

    ServerPath ($199)
    P4 2.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80GB HD
(I dunno, guess I was kind of indifferent to this one since if I configured it, I know it would go over that rate.)

    RocketColo ($164)
    P4 2.40 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 2x80GB HD
(Like the price, haven't seen much about their track record.)

    iWeb ($159)
    P4 2.4GHz processor, 2x80GB IDE HD, 1GB RAM
(Heard a lot of good things about them. But looking for more input.)

So... if I could get any help on this, or if you guys have any other suggestions, I'd REALLY appreciate the help. :]

If you don't mind me asking, what do you plan on using the dedicated server for?

one thing, i have a friend with two servers at fastservers and the avrage uptime on them is only about 60% - their network is frankly crap

One thing to keep in mind, a dedicated server is nothing like a shared server. There is a ton of management involved when you take a step like this, make sure you get some kind of management for your server if you are unexperienced.

I would have added 15minuteservers to the list:

    http://www.15minuteservers.com/Welcome.asp

Make sure to read feedback regarding them as well.

From the companies you have listed, I had a server with ev1 and they have been pretty stable for me.

Go with Ev1 if you know how to manage your own server. Their connection is very good.

I'm surprised by the comments on EV1. I had two boxes with them in the past few years and the network was always horriblly laggy with quite a few outages. Perhaps they've fixed it, but...I'd check to be sure before dropping any quid on a box.

The ev1 forums seems to have multiple irrate customers daily on it...whether this is just the fix it over the forums culture ev1 have created I don't know, but i've seen a number of recurring issues there such as harddrives not being wiped before being given to other customers.

In my personal opinion, and this is from someone who used to work for a company with 6 or so servers there, their core staff are absolutely awesome, Patrick, Mario, Randy, Val and Robert do a great job...but from there on everything pretty much goes downhill. If you want something done right, you have to go up the levels since quite often it will be screwed up by level 1.

I think their re-positioning as a higher-cost provider has actually caused this company more pain than gain since they have been overtaken by TP/SM and they no longer have any justification for poor workmanship....obviously I have no idea of their internal figures though so that's just assumption on my part...
ManageMyServices was sold by me in September 2009. I no longer have any affiliation with this company.

Well, the primary reason is to host a forum that has grown way too fast. Secondary reasons would include some hosting plans in the future.

I'm aware of the change, but also this is something that I'd like to put under my experience belt. I'm willing to learn the ropes, and who knows, I could probably use the experience someday. :]

Best ded. host I know is in Europe:
    http://www.1stserv.com/
I can vouch for Mark and his company... top notch! My ns1.dns.hm is there and it had 100% uptime for over a year.

    Good US based locations are:
    http://www.jaguarpc.com/
I know Greg since long and he + team are great.

    and also

    http://www.cyberwurx.com/
Had a server with them once and it was reliable as hell!

I read a lot of EV1 recommendations. Well... I dealt with them all the time. First with own servers and then maintaining client servers. One word: HORRIBLE! If you want to regret the day, then go with THEM

I appreciate the extra suggestions. ^_^
Looks like the choice is going to be harder than I thought.

If you can handle the management, I'd strongly suggest Tailor Made Servers; I consider them semi-managed. They are not the cheapest, but have outstanding support and network. You won't be disappointed!

60%, right. If any of our critical network segments were even a hair beyond the thresholds that our SLA guarantees, we (FastServers) would no longer exist. But that more than likely goes without saying at this point. Check out discussion elsewhere on this forum, and be sure to browse through other communities as well to gather up a more balanced opinion on FS, and our plethora of competitors.

Keep in mind our particular forum community as well:
http://forums.fastservers.net/ .... discussions of uptime/stability are especially frequent within, if any major or even minor hiccups in service are experienced.

Best of luck on your quest to pinpoint a host!

They do have auctions of servers every once in a while. If you can wait for these, you won't have to pay the set up (if you win the auctions).

I hope someone can help me. Instead of starting a new thread altogether, I'll simply add to this thread as it had questions like mine.

I'm looking for FULLY MANAGED dedicated servers. I want hosting company to do all the patching of Apache/MySQL/Redhat/PHp etc (all those frequent updates and all that), port monitoring, anti virus, firewall, DDos protection, etc etc, whatever is required to keep the hardware working as if it were a shared hosting environment.

Also, I need to be able to have support 24/7 because I am not in the US.

    My shortlist:

    - Voxel.net
[Based in NY so a bit on the expensive side? Searching this forum suggests some good things about them.]

    - The Planet
[Probably out because they're great for people who already know their stuff?]

    - Data393
[Heard a lot about venturesonline but not very recent stuff. Are these guys good?]

    - Rackspace
[Excellent, actual human beings answer my call etc, but so so so expensive - why?!]

    - Resellerworkz
[So many rave reviews about them, but are they really as good as Rackspace or ThePlanet in terms of speed of network? I heard they resell Layeredtech's stuff. How does affect my speed of connectivity etc?]

    Sincerely appreciate any guidance/experiences. Thanks!

Most of the providers you have listed have been discussed and reviewed on here before, so I suggest you try searching these forums if you haven't done so already. Also, just because we purchase servers via LT, this does not have any impact on the Savvis network which our servers are connected too. You will find the Savvis network is highly respected.

Best of luck with your search.

Hostworkz, thanks for your input. I tried PMing you but it tells me I'm not allowed to on this board. My question was: is your reseller hosting not dedicated? Is it shared across many resellers, or do I get those servers to myself? E.g., the "Platinum Plan". Thanks.

ResellerWorkz resells LT's server, so it's a full dedicated server, not just a reseller account. The difference between going with RW vs. LT is that RW provides management, whereas LT does not. Since you want a managed provider, you'd want to go with RW.

As far as it hurting your connectivity, that's not the case at all. It's basically like you're renting a server somewhere, and hiring an admin company to do the management. You just end up paying the same company, which saves you money and hopefully some headaches.

I'm looking for a good dedicated server host that allows IRC :/

They seem to be a bit hard to find. Anyhow, the BARE MINIMUM is

    > 60gb drive
    > 1000gb bandwidth
    > 99% uptime
    > CPanel/WHM
    > 512mb RAM
    > 1.7ghz processor

External linking of IRCd's is a plus, too. Generally, my price range is under $150. I'm with EV1 right now, but they prices are a bit high, so I was looking to switch to somewhere else. Any suggestions would be welcome!
