How to tell if finger broken?
Was playing paintball yesterday, went to clean my gun but my barrel was stuck so put my finger in the barrel to get some gunk out, the gun was off, plus safety was on (electric). Gun misfired and shot my finger (left hand, finger next to pinky). I was wearin gloves, took them off quick and my fingernail there was like a purple mark, then about 5 minutes later turned a blackish-purple color. today the tip of my finger is really the only part bothering me I cant type with it because it feels like somethings under my skin of the finger bothering me, think i should get it checked out?

Heh, I shot my self in the finger paintballing two days ago. Its still a bit swolen but I don't think it's broken. I doubt yours is broken, but it might be a good idea to get it checked out anyways.

You probably burst a blood vessel in your finger nail. If you can move your finger without much pain, cept in the tip, it's probably just a burst blood vessel; similar to hitting your thumb with a hammer. If the pain under the nail gets too bad, you could put a hole in the nail to drain the blood. If you go to a hospital, that's what they will do.

Doubt its broken.... can you move it?
If anything, you just killed the nail... your finger nail will die, and fall off... but it will grow back.
I broke my finger several years ago, when the handle on my parents push mower folded up on it (actually the handle fell on it and smashed it). I couldn't move my finger, and it smashed my finger tip - broke a vessel, and the nail ended up fall off, but it grew back.
There's nothing you can do if you break a finger anyways (unless you shattered it). Just tape it to your middle finger.. that's about it... and try not to move it.0

If you can move your finger, its most likely not broken, however it could be fractured so get it checked out regardless.

If you bend it, than it's not broken.
You may have a hairline fracture. Best thing is to get a splint.
Also, underneath your nail, you can pop the skin and remove the dead blood (the black blood). Your nail may or may not fall off...0

If you can move it it's not broken. at worst you may have a compression fracture in the last bone. That's not that big of a deal and they wouldn't do anything for it. I had 4 or 5 fingers broken durring my kickboxing career. All they do is splint it and tell you not to hit anyone for a couple weeks.

Here's the basic way to tell. Hold your pinky straight out like this:

Now grab it with your other hand and wiggle like this:

You can move your fingers.. Im talking left to right, not back or forward. If it causes great discomfort then it is mots likely broken. If not lateral movement causes pain, it is most likely a jam.
As you can tell, I have broken many fingers in my lifetime

I'm double jointed, I can move my finger back but now I can't. I've broken my pinky before on left hand, why can't it be on the right so I have an excuse not to write stuff and do paperwork lol.
