    Exclamation Speed test my 1-GigE Server!

    I reported recently that my users seem to not be able to get single thread download speeds above 2 MB/sec. Can you post your speed test results from your servers, home/office connections, etc.

    This is from AtlantaNAP on a 100mbs connected server. From my home I was only seeing about 930kbs and thats on a 20/5 mbs cable connection.

    wget http://173.193.32.153/1000mb.bin
    --2010-10-14 12:06:17-- http://173.193.32.153/1000mb.bin
    Connecting to 173.193.32.153:80... connected.
    HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 1073741824 (1.0G) [application/octet-stream]
    Saving to: `1000mb.bin'

    100%[=======================================================================================>] 1,073,741,824 10.9M/s in 1m 49s

    So it appears that...

    Server --> Server = Strong
    Server --> Home = Weak

    Why would that be?

    As far as I know, Server to Server have multiple bandwidth carriers while Server to Home just has one, your ISP. So, for when I request a website, I have to use Cox bandwidth to access it.

    Which makes sense to me but what doesn't is the fact that when I moved servers within 100tb.com network my @home speed dropped from 2+ MB/sec to 500 KB/sec. Same computer, modem, router, internet connection, etc. Only thing that changed really was going from 100tb.com's capped bandwidth package to their uncapped 1 gigE.

    So it appears the bandwidth is strong with this server to server but average server to home.

    Perhaps you should contact 100tb, they should be able to look at it for you.

    I appreciate all the help guys. It appears that 100tb.com has come through and helped restore the speed to the server.

    I'm forced to comcast as my home isp but my friend has Fios and was able to get some really good speeds.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm going to go ahead and remove the test files now.
