I've been with Rackspace for two years now and I've got no plans to move. If you search WHT, the overall comments will be that they are very good, but they come at a high price. You'll also hear "you get what you pay for" a lot and that's very true.

you may also want to take a look at their record of harboring spammers and make a decision as to whether you would feel good about supporting a company that engages in such activity.

    Hello,

I have been with rackspace for almost 2 years and must say they are the best of the best! The only complaint I have is the price! But for 24x7 tech support that can answer ANY question you may have - you pay for what you get! In this case you are paying for excellence and nothing less.

As for harboring spammers - I would disagree. Rackspace has a 3 strike policy. I know because I run a web hosting business and 2 different customers of mine over the past 2 years have violated the TOS. (1 Warez and 1 Spam). I was very happy that rackspace notified me and gave me 24 hours to solve the situation. If they had turned my server off I would have lost hundreds of dollars. So as far as supporting spammers - not so, I say they support their customers and understand that the majority are doing v-based hosting and spam can happen and is out of control of the hoster.

Not to say I support spam. The two sites I had issues with were immediately shut down and I wrote rackspace an apology both times. But I do support their "lets see what happned" attitude before turning a server off.

I thought I might add - 24x7 tech support is actually 24x7. You can call via the phone and get your question answered right there - no press one for this press two for this. All you will get is a very nice lady saying "Rackspace, How can I help you?"

Not like other companies who say 24x7 and then answer your question 7 days later.

im not knocking their service as i have no experience with it. i would, however, like to point out that there is a difference between a shared client on a server violating the TOS (the client gets the boot immediately, of course) and an established spam operation that has their own servers at rackspace and never even has to change their domain name, despite the hoard of complaints they generate. most DCs wont penalize the host for actions of its clients, unless the host has been negligent or attracted such clients deliberately. however, these same DCs will boot every single spam gang that decides to set up shop there.

if you look at a few past threads regarding this issue, you will understand that there is no other explanation besides rackspace handing pink contracts to certain (spamming) clients. if you dont care about doing business with a company that does that (i wouldnt care by the way) *and* you can live with the risk that their whole address space could be blanket listed by spews or spamhaus (i would care about this), by all means go ahead. you should think, however, of the possibility that if you run a hosting company, your clients may start complaining about their email not going through because of blacklisting and there wont be much you will be able to do about it without moving to a different DC.

please note that i am merely providing the information so the thread starter can make an informed decision. if you look up previous threads as per my advice, you will notice that i also criticized the spam nazis that kept beating this dead horse of a point way after it was dead. i think i have sufficiently clarified the issue, so it is up to the thread starter to make a call based on the info provided.

    Rusko,

I have not any problems with e-mail ever, that wasn't because of something specific to my server (or my clients mail clients).

Who knows, they might hand out pink contracts. Some big providers (eart*****, time warner, UUnet) have rumors spreading that they hand out big contracts to spammers. These are rumors and I cannot prove these, but if we go based on here say and ban them, I think we would ban most of the backbone of the web.

Frankly, without domains and an ARIN lookup we have not proven that they are on Rackspace's networks.

I in no way mean to start a heated debate on this board about spam and such, I just wanted to spread my absolute praise for rackspace and thier customer service and reliability - something that no other hosting company I have dealt with has even come close to matching.

i was just providing information, thats all. do a search for rackspace on this board and you will come across several threads where specific domain names are mentioned - there is your proof. there is even the diatribe from the rackspace abuse department manager on how they terminate spammers - spammers she was alerted to in that thread are still hosted at rackspace.

eart***** does not mess with spam - they recently sued several people for spamming, some of which may face heavy fines now. no information on the other two. verio was commonly accused of this though.

remember, im just pointing this out. i am glad you are happy with rackspace =]

    Paul,

Seems very interusting. Verio does ring a bell as for accusations. I might take a look around the board to find some of the domain names.

The spam issue comes up each time someone mentions Rackspace. It's getting boring.

I have received some spam from companies on Rackspace's network. However, it has been the "best" spam I have received. By this I mean that the emails:
    - Had authentic non-forged headers
    - Had a link to the sending company's web site
    - Contained an unsubscribe link that worked when I clicked it and did not receive more mail from the company.
    - Contained a postal address

These spam operations are run by marketing chancers. They are not going to be deterred from running a spam operation. Like everyone else, I would rather that the spammers vanished but that's not going to happen. I would rather that Rackspace worked with these companies to minimise harmful effects rather than just booting them off to a data centre that couldn't care less.

The spam I have received from Rackspace servers is not "legit" spam at all. Forged headers, spoofed addresses, landing pages, get rich quick, drug companies, viagra, enlargement, you name it... it comes from Rackspace.

And no, these are not sporadic clients hosted on servers by an unsuspecting hosting company. These are dedicated spammers on their own servers being protected by Rackspace even after multiple contacts by phone, email etc.

Proof? Click on any of the domains or do a reverse lookup on them and you'll see that they're still hosted by Rackspace.

This issue has been sent to rackspace several times and continue to be spammed by these websites. Phil, could you please respond personally and give a plan of action on what is going to be done about this server?

    Thanks,

    Chris

RackSpace == spam friendly == bad.

Why anyone would choose to give their money to a company that harbors this type of behavior is beyond my scope of understanding.

There are other server providers that provide support on caliber with RackSpace and that do not harbor slime.

Do a SBL lookup, 58 results, most of them well-known spammers.

You never know if you'll get stuck on a subnet with one of these charming fellows, earning yourself blocked emails and complaining customers.

Hello - I found this thread bv following a referrer found in the server log for a site I work on and have found that several of the domains listed here display said site. The site owner professes no knowledge of anything like this. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction as I've never seen anything quite like this before. I do know I want to disassociate these domains from the site. Thanks.

I have 2 servers on a private LAN at rackspace... for 1 year.

I often have trouble getting my mail to customers and newsletter subscribers. I started having the trouble when I moved there a year ago. At first, I didn't realize it was the IP/rackspace until I started contacting email providers to see what was wrong. Luckily, the big ones like yahoo and excite fixed the problem, but smaller email providers sometimes remove the IP, but often do not and I cannot email people who placed orders with me (and did not recieve their confirmation emails).

Uptime is excellent. I have used the support ticket system rather than calling, and response times are slow.

When I moved there, I didn't really get a setup that fit my needs for growth, and I am having problems now that I need an upgrade. The problem is that it is hard to negotiate extra services without paying an arm and a leg because the deal they gave me on the servers to get me in was "too good."

I've heard the 'too good' excuse before, despite the deal not being good at all.

I think AtoZ's story is a fairly good representation of why RackSpace is scum.

You're right about the deal not being THAT good... It was comparable to what I would be paying elsewhere, just "too good" according to their standards. When I was trying to negotiate an upgrade a few months ago, I was told that one of my servers was 1/4 the price others were paying. I was trying to outline the new setup I needed (and was prepared to pay more), and the prices to upgrade were just so much more than what I was already paying that he couldn't even give me a quote. He sent me a copy of a "special" they were running on another inadequate server that cost more than what I had. I gave up and started looking elsewhere. Now my contract is up and I am trying to find a place to go. I hate moving!!!

I would say if anyone would come close to Rackspace, it would be ServInt. The Planet is nowhere near them on quality, network, support.

If you're not comfortable with the waters at Rackspace, ServInt would be something to check into.

Regardless of what others say, Rackspace has the most stable and reliable network, nothing beats their Intensive, and you'll never have any problems reaching/getting support. When they say 24/7 they meant 24/7. The only downfall is 'spam'..and from what I hear, they're cracking down on that too.

    Good luck in your search.

    Greetings:

We manage several servers for clients who are at Rackspace.com.

When we compare Rackspace.com to Verio and Interland (for example), Rackspace.com does come out ahead.

    Thank you.

    rackspace v. interland

I was with Dialtone for 2 years, and moved to Rackspace when Interland took over. Rackspace definitely ranks above Interland.

Call this spammer on rackspace. Tell them you will report them to their datacenter for spamming. Hold phone away from ear as they let loose ear splitting laughter.

Do you want to support that?

I was considering a new box with rackspace, however I am not so sure after reading about the spam issues.

    Looking hard at SERVINT now.
