    What is Plesk missing?

I'm trying to decide whether to go with Plesk or Cpanel for my web hosting needs. I've heard tons of complaints about Cpanel so I'm "skeptical" about it now .

Anyways, what I want to know from you pros is what features are lacking in Plesk that Cpanel can do well?

Also, is the source code of Plesk available for me to modify and add new features?

    Thanks!

I doubt it; it would be too easy to circumvent their licensing code if it was easily modified. That said, I'm not sure exactly how this would be done... can someone who actually has firsthand knowledge answer this?

Still, I found Plesk (as the first Control Panel I ever used) to be simple enough for a newbie.

I think Plesk's interface is more than decent... I think it's superior. It's simple and easy to understand. Just because Plesk doesn't have pictures of mimes and other cr*p doesn't mean its interface is not as effective as CPanel for the end user.

I haven't had a chance to really dig into the guts of Plesk yet (I've played around with the free downloadable demo for about 6 hours so far), but I think most of it is PHP, and if that's the case you may be able to add your own artwork (although I may be totally wrong on this--but Plesk's promo material does say, "Plesk is striving to increase the ability of the customer to make his or her own customizations.")

But plesk seems to be missing lots of features that cpanel has. Is this true or am I mistaken?

Yes it miss quite a few features but are they really important? Most of them are third party scripts anyway.

Maybe the reason CPanel is so buggy.
I find that Plesk has all you really need.
    CPanel has too much.

For the record I am not bashing Plesk.

Just take a look at features that cpanel gives and what features plesk gives.

I am sure Plesk is a good and stable control panel.

E-mail is not the only thing they want.

Cpanel in my opinion has more options then Plesk.
Login in cpanel and then login in Plesk and see what each one has. I can't possibly list every software each control panel comes with.

Cpanel definetly wins with pre-installed scripts. It has a lot of them which many users use.

It, also, has a lot that "normal" people don't or won't use.
I think so many options allows for so many more bugs.
I found Plesk quite adequate when I was an "every day user."

Hearing the number of people using Plesk and Cpanel, there is a wide difference. If you find plesk interesting then it's your opinion.

....It has a lot of them which many users use.
It also provides features for users who ordinarally wouldn't even consider using. More features - more support. If someone sees it, they will try or want to use it. And when they can't get cgi scripts for example to magically work, they call on support. Plesk gives you what the 'everyday' customer would want. Plus a little extra. Cpanel gives a lot of cool features, but some people attempting to use them have no business even trying to use them.

    Aloha

    was very curious
I wonder what normal is ??
(this is not trying to be negative palm
I guess my normal and your normal might be dif ??
that is why I was curious what other people wanted ???
I am really trying to guess what they would want on a daily basis ???
I can think of these things on a weekly basis:
Stats (see how things are going)
    Email (add users delete users)
Password a dir or upload files (if this was the case I would build this into ther web app)
if this is a once in a while thing Fileman does just great

but that is all I can ever think of that most real world users want
now Program types and design types might want more but those would not always trickle down to the end user ??
    just my thoughts
I stated on another post that some people who host are hosting to other techy types that want to play with stuff etc...
and some are just end users who want stuff to work and not dink with things ?
I guess for my end user/Clients I handle most all other stuff so I am not in need of a panel that offers all bells and whitles to the end user woud rather not have them mucking stuff up
I guess when I got an account that had cpanel it was very buggy hard to use and had no real defined feel or look
I am not trying to start a war here so please don't
this is for me and my clients.

Well, more than Psa 2.0 cpanel has:
    - chat and all cgi tools
    - cron jobs
    - apache handler
    - myme types
    - restart services ( php, apache, exim...) (whm interface)
    - mailing list
    - notice about new/cancellation domains (whm interface)
    - server http bandwith measurement (whm interface)
    a friendly interface

    And Psa 2.0 has:
    - apache-asp module
    - auto generate SSL
    - email box and disk quota physically allowed
    - mail groups
    - domains creation date
    php high reliability.

    Both are 3 level
Now it's a very personal choice to pay more attention to nice interface, cgi pre-installed or to general reliability.

    bye

You click on the domain, then on report

Oh that's ok, I just meant total server bandwith that would be helpful for the ones who bill the exceeded bandwith

    Panels

    Nothing against panels

I would rather have a larger company to lean on for problems then what cpanel offers.

These panels are mission critical, and i dont have time for problems with them.

Cpanel is just full of bugs, like someone just threw a bunch of stuff together, and bang panel.

Plesk is very stable, support is great, and though it may lack some features right now then cpanel. I want reliability and plesk offers that.

Also Plesk just released, there are so many things coming out for it in the near future. I see plesk taking solid market share.

Ensim is also releasing 3. This is suppost to be quite solid. I think cpanel is slowly going away. Also cpanel came from vdi and was used in there datacenter. Most companies I have spoke with have never heard of cpanel. It is not listed in many magazines and has no recognition for being a great panel

    My thoughts
