Bought a new laptop.. Warrenty or no warranty?

I just bought a new laptop from Best Buy.. They offered their warranty on it for 2 years for $229.00. What do you think is it worth it?

It covers "everything" including accidental per the store. I only paid $550 for the laptop.

No, extended warrantees are usually not worth it. If something is going to fail with the computer it's usually going to do it with in the first 30 days, and you would be able to return it.

No matter what computer you buy today the only thing that really has a remote chance of failing is the Hard Drive and thats a cheap easy fix that anyone can do on there own.

I bought a new TV from Best Buy last week and they tried to sell me on a 4 year extended, and for the price they were charging for it, in 4 years I could buy a new TV at the rate prices are falling.

What laptop did you end up getting?

Not worth it in that case. By the time you have an issue with it, the laptop probably won't even be worth more than the cost of warranty itself.

FYI - BestBuy typically does not have the best pricing on laptops, I wouldn't generally recommend buying one there.

Nice laptop mate..extended warranty only for people who got their laptop broken so often, IMO. you could try your laptop with it's current warranty, or you can try to look if L655 has so many problems, and many people encounter problems, whatever the problem is. if so, and you get a major problem (such as LCD or worse) then you might consider extended warranty. however yours is toshiba and that's good. never heard lots of people complaining about their toshiba.

but, from my personal opinion, the guys here are right, if you get a major problem then you should sell your laptop and get new one.

I figure the warrenty is almost half of the amount I paid for the laptop.. If it even lasts me 3 years I think it paid for it self.

The laptop when purchased should come with at least a one year manufactures warranty and if purchased with a credit card it may be extended by a year. Some credit cards add to the warranty.

If you are probably going to purchase a new laptop in the next 2 years, then I recommend not getting the warranty because it is not cost effective. If you are not, then get the warranty.

Only reason I think of getting warranty is because of hardware and LCD screens.

It all depends on how long you're going to be keeping the laptop/when you'll be purchasing a new one in my opinion.

    $229 for a warranty on a $500 laptop?

    I would definitely pass.

Setting aside the cost/benefit/risk considerations for a moment, I've heard some real horror stories from people who did buy Best Buy extended warranties and were later very unhappy with the service provided.

If you do not buy the warranty you leave your options open for who does any repairs that may be needed, if ever.

As a general rule I avoid extended warranties. I did buy one for the MacBook Pro on which I'm typing, and it paid off on two occasions with a new battery and a replacement motherboard. Add to that the superb service provided by Apple and it was money well spent. Of course the ratio of purchase cost to warranty cost was much higher than 2 to 1 as in your case.

If I think I can buy a replacement anytime without worrying about the cost, then I skip the extended warranty.

I would definitely not get a 2yr warranty which is half the price of the laptop. There is always a 6month to 1 yr warranty every time you buy an electronic gadget or device. Besides, it also depends on how you take extra care with your laptop. If the product itself has a defect, you would know right away after a few days or weeks of using it, and you can have it replaced (but not likely to happen with Toshiba which is a very good brand).

If the laptop is going to break. I will most likely break within the first year.

I generally pass on store warranties because one of two things will happen:
    1. I'll replace it before it has a chance to fail.
    2. I've bought a quality product that should be reliable.

If I was worried about my laptop failing within 2 years, I'd pick another manufacturer. Personally I tend to get a new laptop every 2 years anyhow so it'd be a waste of money (imho).

Have you tried rebooting? Is it just certain web sites, or all web sites? And finally, are any other computers on the same Internet connection experiencing or not experiencing the issues?
