    Talking What happens to incoming emails when the server is down or offline ?

    I was just wondering what happens to incoming emails when the server is down or offline?

    Depends on how the sending mail server is setup, most of them try for 72 hours to deliver then return a cannot send to server type message.

    It'll keep trying for X amount of days, then it'll bounce back.

    What about when the domain name is expired?
    I had a friend who forgot the renew her domain name it took her about 7 days to get everything back to normal.

    If it took that long then incoming email would simply be bounced back as being undeliverable unless they had a backup email server.

    That should result in a bounce back because the mail server will not be able to resolve the domain name.
