Have you tried to see the server load status ? If the cpu is up tu 4 - 5 % the website will start to load slow and slower if the load is higher

Pingdom is most reliable monitoring website, we are using them for years with not problems. Maybe your firewall is blocking pingdom ips some times.

We use their servers for shoutcast streaming ... for the first months was ok but then problems with the servers ,,, flood ,,, and they was at the limit with the network.

Now i think they have made...

You can try to get more ram and a good quad core cpu ,,,, if you try to force mysql to use more ram and less cpu you will see some difference... Serving mysql from ram will be much faster then you...
