Put the number into companieshouse.gov.uk
You can get all the details of about the company on the website companieshouse.gov.uk . You can also use their webcrack feature to find about any company.

I must say that this is a great feature, especially when you purchase from a company that seems shaky. It's a shame systems like this aren't available globally, or that there isn't some kind of an international company listing mandate.
Whilst it's beter than most countries, it is only as good, accurate and upto date
as the information provided by the company to 'companies house'.
If the business is a sole trader, then you can't put anything on the companies house register.
Well you can have private unlimited companies if that is what you mean.

As a side note.
The same site can be used for checking UK reg. Charities,
which are effectively Ltd Companies.
Also last year[I think] the rules were changed so that there is no longer the need for '2 or more' people to form a Ltd. Co. an Individual can now 'go Ltd.'.
Correct, but if I remember correctly it was October 2008 that particular rule changed. I know that when I incorporated in January last year I was the only person required. Note that by incorporating on your own all it does is limit those with a legal obligation to deal with company matters.
