Yes, I usually prefer to get an invoice addressed to my company's name and address on some kind of official letterhead (with the contact information of the other business).
I do this for records/accounting purposes (business expenses and audit records).
These are my priorities:
Sale = Great
Invoice = Better
Payment = Best
but:
Overdue = Bad
Non Payment = Worst
Thats my view both for my customers & myself as a customer of others.
Records are an essenrial part of any business.
We operate on an accrual accounting system, and can't pay anyone without an invoice. As mentioned by previous posters, an invoice is also essential for proper accounting.
Therefore, if you were doing work for us and wanted to get paid - you'd better issue an invoice :)
You must have a proper invoicing system. If you want big business, you must be able to support their needs. Many large businesses utilize multiple services for their hosting needs, and that is simply another invoice that must be obtained in order to properly manage their tax obligations to the IRS (or similar in other countries). I have had clients from around the globe ensure that we would be able to create invoicing for record keeping before even coming on board.
Do you guys consider a paypal receipt as an invoice?
Moderators, not sure if WHT has a business section but I think this thread needs to be moved there.
