I always figured that would be the way to go for a registrar. My understanding is that they pay the registry for another year for your domain when it expires - and if you let it lapse they are out that money.
Register.com will let a domain lapse to the 'unpaid names department', where anyone willing to pay for the bill can buy them. I got some nice domains that way once and within a week had someone emailing me stating that they were waiting for them to expire so they could register them.
Too bad! :bawling:

I don't think these are unrenewed domain names since some of the expiry dates go as late as 2012! I would guess these are actually bad purchases with credit card problems instead.
Moreover, when a registrar pays for a domain name on the expiry date, they are able to get a refund from the registry within 45 days. That's exactly why most registrars render some 30-40 days grace period.
Nameslave, oooh, I did not know that about the 45 day refund for them. Good to know..
Going to check out the store now.

Wow, that used domain store is crap! Did you see someone was selling domains server7000.com thru server7040.com? :)
41 domains times 9 works out to be a pretty expensive error for that person.
Or wait, maybe these are domains that people bought and then the customer threatened to do a chargeback on them. Would explain why they are priced more than the normal registration amount and would help to cut down on the fraud loss.
Just guesses, no specific info on the website about it that I found.

Whois info on one of the domains lists this as owner:
Registrant: Confiscated Domain Confiscated Domains

I was told these are in fact names that GD has confiscated due to fraudulent orders as well as chargebacks which had past the 5 day grace period via the registry.
The reason most of the domains are registered for 10 years is that when someone is using a stolen credit card, they do push their luck.
But if you look, its not a 35$/65$ one-time fee. These prices are per year! Making it more of a lease of a domain name.
Lets give an example, gymbuddy.net on sale for $55/yr. Its been registered for 10 years. So what happens if someone trys to transfer this domain away once it is in their name?
*shrug* not sure. That's weird, maybe it's a marketting study - they take the best of their confiscated names and then see if they sell for a premium.
Maybe they will lower the prices as time goes on. Maybe they make you pay for the full 10 years right away?? That would be weird.
This is not typical Godaddy stuff. This is more Verisign. I used to scoff at them selling .cc and .ws names on ebay.
