If I start a VPS hosting service,
what will I need to begin with?
The server? Software?
Well, You would need a BIG server which can handle VPS's.. I have a 16GB ram which cost's a BOMB!
The VPS industry is starting to become exactly like the web hosting one. Overcrowded with hosts that sell for $4.
I don't plan on overselling anything. I want to provide quality VPS with 24/7 customer support. Profit does not have to be maximal, that is not what I am looking for :)
That's good. Get a business plan, look around for server solutions (Are you going to colocate, or are you going to rent?), also look around for pricing and specifications on packages and what you can bring on that will give you a competitive advantage.
My plan is to rent a single server (quad core) and start off from there with some competitive pricing. Eventually building up to more servers as we accumulate more clients and the demand for VPS.
I could help you out on my spare time if you would like to. You know where to find me.
That would be great,
I really would like to know what kind of software should I use and how much disk space, bandwidth, and RAM should I have on my first server
If you want to go enterprise level I suggest Virtuozzo. If your on a starting budget go with HyperVM/OpenVZ. At 50 cents a VPS its a bargain.
where does the profit come from?
I think you need a reputation first. I saw you on DP, your hosting is going better & better. :)
Start small and build some rep up.
Been offering shared/reseller hosting for the past 2 months and it's been going good. I've proven myself to clients and now setting up my VPS servers. I have a server which is the "master" server and the 2nd one would be the "slave" server which would contain all the VPS.
So far so good.
quad core is best for starting vps hosting company
Quad core 16GB ram with Virtuzzo will be a ideal choice for starting vps
I have recentely started into the VPS hosting industry.
I would also say go for Quad Core, you do not need so much memory in the beginning, 4GB will do. You do not want to be paying out extra costs for resources that are not utilized. Most datacentres alllow you to upgrade memory at any time.
Also i would go for the HyperVM/OpenVZ setup, very simple to install, the HyperVM installation does it all for you.
Even though i mentioned going with the HyperVM/OpenVZ setup, you may want to take a look at the HyperVM/Xen setup.
It seems that many people are moving to Xen these days due to its paravirtualization technology, stability and isolation, and the fact that its a True Virtualization technology and not a Operating System Layer like OpenVZ.
There are benefits to both platforms, but Xen does not share the hosts nodes kernel unlike OpenVZ, which means if there was any sort of kernel exploit it would only bring down the VPS that was exploited, but with OpenVZ if the kernel was exploited then it would bring down ALL VPS's hosted on that server.
Hope this information has been helpful to you.
Regards,
I agree, if going with HyperVM, go with Zen.
Get Disks. many 15000rpm, small size (73GB).
When you have customers with large data move them to cheap 250GB/7200 disks.
IO is the problem with VPS today.
