What is some good software (free, if possible) that can make good looking logos?
There are NO free vector drawing programs that I know of. You could try the gimp if you are just experimenting but that program is raster based as far as I know. However it is FREE and I have heard good things about it. It is similar to Photoshop I understand so not really the right thing for logo design but it might alow you to hone your skills before moving onto the REAL stuff.Quote:

Simon
I use illustrator..
If you're just starting out, The Logo Creator ( http://thelogocreator.com ) isn't a bad choice - it's premade logos that you can edit or build new ones from scratch by combining certain elemnts that come with the software.
Downside is - your logo will look like zillion others because of the easy to identify premade design elements.
So nothing i would recommend for professional logo design, but if you're just starting it's nice to begin with.
Adobe illustrator is one of the best vector software i know, you can download the 30 days trial from adobe's homepage.
As gRiz said, Adobe Illustrator is good. I used it a while back but then I whiped my C drive and now its gone. For pixel logos you can pretty much use any program, PSP... PS...
I would definitely stay away from pixel based logos (i.e. those created in photoshop etc) unless you have them designed at a very high resolution to begin with, or you are only ever going to use them for a website.
Far better to have them designed in vector format so they'll be flexible and scalable for future uses.
If you're planning to create the logo yourself, and you don't want to splash out on expensive vector based design software like illustrator, you'll find a full version of a vector graphics package on the cover cd of the march issue of 'computer arts' called 'Canvas'. If you're in the UK you can probably walk into your local news agents and pick this up off the shelf (hurry though because the april issue is out now aswell), or if you're outside the UK you should be able to order it and have it delivered from:
http://www.computerarts.co.uk
Can't vouch for canvas personally because I use adobe illustrator, and I haven't had a chance to install it and try it out yet. From the tutorial they have in the magazine it looks pretty good though (particularly for free).
Don't expect any software to do the job completely for you though. They're all just tools and it's the designer who's using them who is the most important part of the equation. Good logo design is an artform.
Gimp ;)
free and Version 2 has just been released
Gimp isn't a vector package though.
About the Adobe trial version, when I first had a trial version the software does not let you save, it's just to show you how the program works, dont get your hopes up that you will be able to make logos for thirty days. Unless the changed it, but the trial is a good way to get a feel for it.
I believe macromedia offers a trial of their freehand package that'll let you save, though you're not really supposed to be using it for any commercial use during that time according to their usage agreement.
I prefer photoshop
photoshop is only good for web and other pixel related stuff. If u create logos in photoshop the vector lines are not as clean. Just my opinion tho. U should use vector app's for vector graphics and bitmaps app's for photo stuff. ie photoshop..
I did study graphic design for 4 years at RMIT university. ;)
http://www.koffice.org/karbon/ , for Linux at least
Adobe now lets you save when using trial versions. I remember I tried Photoshop a while ago and was a little disappointed that I couldn't save. But I downloaded Illustrater a month or so ago and used it fully for 30 days.
someone knows another software like "thelogocreator" ?
I use photoshop for all, but i like freehand to do prints and illustrator to manipulate typographies. Its depends on the kind on work.

CorelDRAW here...nothing to beat it... :D
in 1 word illustrator. It's the industry standard for those kind of things. You can argue about industry standards, but there is a reason why it is like that.
It costs a lot though..
Completly new logo software - aaa-logo.comQuote:

Not free, but I like Freehand and Fireworks for all of my graphics.
Skencil has a win32 version
http://www.nongnu.org/skencil/devel.html (need to scroll down a bit)
I haven't used it myself, but it is a free vector drawing program.
I use illustrator, but there is something called Sodipodi (google for it) that will let you make SVG vector images.
