I know this may sound stupid but most of the security strategies are built around the worst possible scenarios. What if, for any reason, USA loses its internet connection with the rest of the world, how will this impact the rest of the world?

First off, this will not happen. There are numerous redundant connections from EU and Asia to USA which would stop this from happening.
But if this were to somehow happen, The internet would be almost dead. There are so many websites hosted in the US a great portion of the sites you visit would be down.
Well first off if the USA loses internet, (lets say the USA magically disappears with all of its occupants) Then you would not be able to access anything that's hosted in the USA. Other functions of the internet would still be accessible.
In reality though, if the USA went "poof" off the internet, there is truly other much more substantial things to worry about than "my email don't work" or "I cant check facebook or twitter".
run for the hills!!
Its somewhat funny to think about this, considering 20 years ago, there really was no internet in the USA. Makes me realize just how dependent we really have become on the Internet (not sure if that a good thing or a bad thing).
If we went offline for 24 hours it could be good maybe for a consumer such as ourselves, however for military purposes and security it could be very bad.
You're probably going to see overload-type outages in several alternative transit points between the remaining regions. Luckily though, you just took out one of the biggest traffic consumer & source so it might balance out in the end.
It may sound stupid but it has been discussed for sometime and guess what? There are those in the US government that think it may be the best possible scenario!!
Here is a link to just one article: http://news.cnet.com/8301-31921_3-20029282-281.html
I could see a scenario of a natural disaster knocking out a major data center. Look how bad people panic when a data center goes down for 24 hours. Remember when the Planet was down not so long ago which caused many to be in a frenzy.
The US is not invincible. If the US economy were to collapse tomorrow, it could very well cause many internet outage issues.
Good question!
Of course, if the US lost it's Internet connectivity, we'd all have BIG problems and NOT just online issues. I like the response that Google would find a work-a-round.
Don't worry aatayyab, We all will take action to fix the connection together...lol
If datacenters would just participate in the earth hour every year, people would have no access to sites for a minimum of 1 hour per year. I wonder how they will react into just 1 hour of downtime. Kids screaming outside, "I didn't finished the game!".
Living with the internet for years then it suddenly cuts off would be like an addiction being removed to you. :D
Don't worry, China is not going to shut down internet for the US. They enjoy hacking into our systems way to much.
In that case, we can't talk at WHT any more.
Then I guess Baidu will take over!?
Be like not having a tractor to plow a field with and having to get the old mule outa the barn again to do the plowing.
