It might be a good idea to first figure out what kind of CPU's, memory, disks and RAID setup you need.
Based on that you can put together some configurations and compare.
Ok, will do!
Based on your budget, first choose which do you want the branded one or the other type..? :D
and just try to find the enough specification based on your needed. :)

Just to be clear you can't or at least its not wise to host a VPS Node and shared host node on the same server. I would think it nearly impossible.
So you will need to pick one or the other or get more than one server.
what exacticly is SPOF?
Buy two 1U servers with 4 bays for hard disks for RAID10.
Then there is the issue of backups, you may need a third server or hire an outside service.
Try gopcn.com
we build hardware from them. for $3k-4k, get a dual quad servers with 12-24gb ram 4 hdds on raid-10. Always consider the supermiro motherboard with -f so that IMPI will be useful to handle all management rather than visiting DC. Some DCs will help you build the server for a small fees.
seems no one yet to give you a hard spec for a high-end VPS node.
dual Intel Xeon Gulftown E5645 hex-core, dual 6x 2.4Ghz cores, 24x HT cores
Supermicro X8DTI-F dual socket 1366 server board, 12x DDR3 DIMM slots
48GB (6x 8GB triple channel) ECC Registered DDR3-1333, 6x open, 96GB Max
8x Western Digital 1TB RE4 RAID Edition 7200rpm, 64M buffer
Adaptec 5805 8-port hardware RAID-5/6/10 controller
Adaptec ABM-800 BBU
Supermicro SC825TQ-R720LPB 2U Rackmount Chassis, 2x 720w redundant PSU
above spec should be right around $5K.
if you run windows, then do consider Adaptec 6805 + AFM-600 4G NAND cache module. they're actually cheaper than 5805+BBU combo.
Apaqdigital, dont you think a dual cpu of opteron to be better priced for the same performances than the xeon?
it should peak around 2.5A/120v, 50% load prolly is around 1.6A/120v.
8x SATA RAID-10 gives very decent IOPs already! can it be improved? sure! but for the same 4TB RAID-10 array volume, 12x 600GB 15K SAS can easily costs you another $3K, and 12x 600GB MLC SSD is another $5K~$6K. is that money well spent? only you the buyers can make that decision....
