Hi everyone,
Is there a turkney solution to offer your clients DNS management ? Im looking into providng a DNS control panel to all my clients, which again will boost my potential domain registrations.
Or is the best solution to maybe make one your self which updates a primary DNS that again updates to one sub server ?

I think you might be better served by becoming a reseller for a registrar with good DNS Management built in. Like eNom, for example.
-
Been using ResellerClub/DirectI for years now, and got a very good deal on domains there. So I would like to stick with them..
Soo I was looking for a self hosted solution over VPS/Dedicated.

Webmin + Virtualmin, webmin is free and contains a bind module where you can add zones etc.. Virtualmin costs money and is a more webhosting oriented control panel with the usual hosting features..
There's also directadmin, cpanel and so forth.
I'm not sure there is a pure DNS only panel out there, so you would get a bunch of other features as well.

Coax's suggestion seems pretty good. There are DNS-only solutions, but may are relatively hard to administer (especially for end-users). A common control panel (e.g. cPanel) may do the job, though!

Does cPanel have a DNS plugin ?

I don't know about directi, but netearthone (on the same logicbox system as directi) has a dns management module as an addon. For us, it cost's .25 per year per domain. Does directi not offer this? And if they do indeed offer it, is there a reason you don't want to use it?
-
I want to offer my clients the DNS system through our own systems and I also provide clients with norwegian top level domains which again is not supported by DirectI. So just want the clients to be able to gather all their domain dns administration under one roof.

If you are creative, you could setup PowerDNS and skin one of the PowerDNS Web Interfaces to match your company.
Tie that in with your registrar and you might be able to make something work without much effort.
I don't think you'll find anything off the shelf tho.

Power Admin, Vega DNS and so on - there are many options out there that work very well

Ah, nice to know that I am not alone (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=749323) in requesting this. :D
No, cPanel doesn't have a plugin. They have a DNSonly (http://layer1.cpanel.net/) product, but that still doesn't give a control panel that customers can use just by registering a domain name. Resellerclub does provide this, but you explained why you can't use it.
It's unfortunate that dnsmadeeasy.com doesn't offer this - PowerDNS seems expensive, although I haven't checked prices with them.
-
If there is no form of turnkey solution, I was looking into devloping one my self. I would really like to offer my clients this service either as a plugin to WHMCS or an external login/system that handles my clients domains that they want to use DNS mangement on.
Somebody know about anyone that have made on their self ?
-
I asked dnsmadeeasy.com what they would charge to build something like this for me and they said about 80 hours for the customization for a fully de-branded interface @ $125 per hour. I didn't ask them if the cost would be less for a co-branded interface.
To their credit, they also suggested this:
If you have a limited budget then we would suggest trying to find an already open source GUI tool to manage your DNS for your customers.

Doesn't this do what you want? I think it's free. That cannot be too expensive.

Yeah.... It is free. Perhaps the user is saying the time to do it is an expense? Or perhaps he didn't expect to pay for the actual hosting (and the cost of running the servers to put powerdns on is not free?)
I'm not sure what is in implying regarding that price comment... But yes, powerdns is free, and the tools to manage it, are also free.

Sure, PowerDNS is open source, but I am looking for something similar to their ASP solution (http://www.powerdns.com/en/services.aspx) - that is not free. Nor will it be inexpensive to hire someone to build a front end similar to it and integrate it into my own systems etc.
-
you want it on a Windows server? How much is the ASP Solution.

ASP does not mean active server pages here.
This time it meast application service provider. ;)

You look into this?

Customizing anything is not easy or cheap.
What are you planning on doing for your users experience anyway?

Thanks for the link.

Yeah, I guess so. :(
You know, this would be rather easy if I decided to use namecheap's domain management features. Easily done with resellerclub's DNS management services too. All I need to do is to use their nameservers etc.
The difficulty is when I want to offer those kind of features in my own brand name.
I guess it's ultimately a question of balancing 'must-haves' and 'nice-to-haves' especially when you aren't sitting on a pile of cash.:)

Hi,
Have you tried MydnsConfig? This one is more than easy to use, if you know a little about A records, and all that stuff.
The complete instructions are available for many distros here :
