Web Hosting Provider, The Planet, Debuts Dallas Data Center Expansion
Houston, Texas - (The Hosting News) - November 24, 2008 - The Planet privately held dedicated hosting company, has made enhancements to feature energy-effficient design, and accommodate up to 10,000 servers, in its newly upgraded Dallas D6 data center.
The new phase adds 12,000 square feet to the company's operations, bringing The Planet's total data center footprint to 167,000 square feet. With an enhanced design that completely separates hold and cold air, the company estimates the data center's coefficient of efficiency will be approximately 1.5, which is below the 1.6 ideal ranking. The coefficient of efficiency is an EPA- and Uptime Institute-recognized measurement of the total power necessary to operate a data center divided by its critical power, which is the energy required to operate its servers.
Jeff Lowenberg, Vice President of Facilities at The Planet noted, ''We continue to experience solid customer demand, so this new space enables us to accommodate our growth. Additionally, operating our data centers at peak performance is important to both our company and our customers, especially as we prepare for our future.''
To further extend its energy efficiency, the new data center floor extends the plenums of the computer-room air conditioning (CRAC) units through the ceiling, using that space as a return air path. The Planet is using CPI (Chatsworth Products Inc.)-ducted exhaust cabinets in the new phase, taking steps beyond traditional ''hot aisle-cold aisle'' setups to completely isolate the hot and cold air in the data center.
The company operates six world-class data centers, with four in Dallas and two in Houston.
Ultimately, The Planet endeavors to provide the following:
- High level of network capacity and speed to deliver peak performance
- Instant scalability to handle even the largest spikes in network traffic
- Parallel, redundant, multi-tiered network routing and switching architecture to assure reliability and stability
- Multiple layer network security that prevents Delayed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks from harming businesses
- Knowledgeable experts with a passion for excellence and a commitment to operate the best networks in the business
