Web Hosting Infrastructure Provider, iWeb Group, Expands to 15 Gbps Capacity

Quebec, Canada - (The Hosting News) - August 22, 2008 - Internet hosting infrastructure provider, iWeb Group Inc. and subsidiary of iWeb Technologies, will soon be completing its network expansion, to upgrade total network capacity to 15Gbps.

While adding three new carriers, the addition of these three new transit providers will mean better diversity, redundancy and reachability for all our customers and partners.

The following new carriers will be added to iWeb’s Network:

- T-Systems / Deutsche Telekom (In production)
- 3Men@Work / Bell Peering (In production)
- Level 3 Communications (Coming at the end of August)

With the additional transit providers, iWeb will be directly linked to more networks which will result in connections being more direct and more efficient for all customers. These additions will affect mostly the High Quality Network customers, but will also enhance incoming routes for its Redundant Unmetered Network customers; while also providing additional redundancy.

The Unmetered Network upgrade includes additional Cogent Bandwidth.
Once all the upgrades will be completed, iWeb’s network will have a total network capacity of 15 Gbps dedicated to hosting services. The High-Quality Network and incoming routes will combine the networks of 7 carriers for a total of 11 Gbps, while the Redundant Unmetered Network (Cogent-based) now totals 4 Gbps. It is important to note that each part of iWeb’s network (High Quality and Unmetered) is configured to backup the other if necessary and that customers of both networks benefit from all available routes for incoming traffic.

Below is complete list of its network composition:
- 3 Gbps with Videotron Telecom
- 3 Gbps with Tata Communications, formerly Teleglobe
- 4 Gbps with Cogent Communications (Unmetered Network)
- 1 Gbps with Peer1 Network
- 1 Gbps with Priority Colo (TorIX peering)
- 1 Gbps with Level 3 Communications (Coming at the end of August)
- 1 Gbps from 3 Men @ Work (Bell peering)
- 1 Gbps from T-Systems / Deutsche Telekom

iWeb’s first telecom link, back in 2000, was a 100 Mbps link, which had less than 1% of the capacity offered to iWeb customers currently. In the next few months, the company also expects to upgrade its main transit providers to 10Gbps.

Earlier this summer, the company attained ranking among Profit Magazine’s top 100 Canadian companies, based on revenue growth over the past 5 years. From 2002 to 2007, the company’s revenues have gone from 1.35 million to 9.82 million as of October 1st 2007, an increase of 627%; enough for iWeb to make its entry into the 100th position on the annual ranking.

The PROFIT 100 is the annual ranking which rates the top 100 Canadian companies based on the percentage of their revenue growth over a 5-year span. Produced by the business magazine PROFIT, 2008 marks the 20th edition of the ranking.

Founded in 1996, iWeb offers a full line of advanced IP hosting services either through shared hosting, dedicated servers or colocation in three data centers, featuring over 52,000 square feet of floor space and the latest technological equipment. iWeb provides services in English, French and Spanish to clients in more than 130 countries.

Dedicated Servers for Technical Computing Workloads, Expanded by Sun Microsystem

Santa Clara , California - (The Hosting News) - August 22, 2008 - Technology firm and web hosting provider, Sun Microsystems, Inc., has released a new extended line of Intel Xeon-based Sun Fire servers, with two new offerings for High Performance Computing (HPC), Web 2.0 and back office computing workloads.

The new solutions include the fastest 1U server for HPC workloads and the most expandable 2U enterprise-class system based on Intel Xeon processors. The Sun Fire X2250 and Sun Fire X4250 servers, powered by one or two dual- or quad-core Intel Xeon processors 5200 or 5400 series, run a variety of operating systems, including the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS), Linux and Windows.

Bob McGaughey, VP of product management for the Systems Group, Sun Microsystems noted, ”Sun’s Intel Xeon-based product line has proven to be wildly popular with customers. To keep up with demand, we are already announcing the seventh and eighth Xeon-based systems since our strategic alliance with Intel in 2007. Today we’re extending the value of the line by introducing fast, energy-efficient systems with larger memory footprints that scale to address the needs of our HPC and Web 2.0 customers.”

The Sun Fire X2250 server is a perfect 1U server for HPC workloads such as MCAE, EDA, energy and financial services, giving customers an inexpensive compute engine for highly dense, power-sensitive environments that delivers lightning-fast performance and can easily scale for parallel processing. When used in conjunction with the freely available Lustre file system, customers running these applications can scale to tens of thousands of nodes, petabytes of data, and billions of files. Other key features include:

  • Low power consumption: Featuring the low-power Intel Xeon Processor 5400 series, each processor dissipates a maximum of 50W of power, or 12.5W per core 35 percent lower than standard 80W parts found on the IBM System X3450 server.
  • Lightning fast speeds: The memory subsystem and Front Side Bus (FSB) bandwidth of the Sun Fire X2250 server are up to 20 percent faster than that of the Dell PowerEdge 1950, allowing HPC users to simulate more realistic, higher-resolution crash tests. In addition, the processing speed of the Sun Fire X2250 server using the Intel Xeon Processor L5420 (2.5GHz, 50W) is 133MHz faster than the fastest 50W processor found on the HP ProLiant DL160 G5 server. This attribute lets energy-conscious datacenter managers save the maximum level of power possible, without compromising the performance their engineers need to meet project deadlines.
  • Ultimate performance: The Sun Fire X2250 server achieved record-breaking integer, floating point and integer throughput scores on the industry-standard SPEC CPU2006 benchmark, which measures the performance of the processor, memory and compiler on the tested system by executing a range of tasks and capturing the time it takes to complete each of them. Sun’s server shows versatility by delivering these results under the OpenSolaris(TM) and Linux operating systems. In addition to being the industry’s first submission under the OpenSolaris OS, the Sun Fire X2250 server used Sun(TM) Studio software to deliver a world-record SPECompM2001 score for all systems running four threads(2), clearly demonstrating to start-ups and developers the value and advanced features of the community-developed open-source OS and award-winning compiler tools.

The Sun Fire X4250 server is the most expandable 2U enterprise-class system powered by Intel Xeon processors, with the highest disk count of any comparable server in the market. It is an ideal platform for customers running Web 2.0, back office and database applications who want the features of the Sun Fire X4150 server, but need more internal storage and PCI Express slots for expandability. Features include:

  • Highest disk count: With 16 SAS disk drives, the Sun Fire X4250 server offers the highest disk count of any server of its kind — allowing local hosting for large database applications so most companies no longer need to purchase a separate storage unit. As a result, operational costs for space, energy and cooling are decreased while more work is performed.
  • More memory: The Sun Fire X4250 server features the highest memory capacity of comparable servers, with up to 16 memory slots delivering 64 GB of fully buffered DDR2 memory.
  • Better expansion possibilities: The Sun Fire X4250 server supports six PCI Express slots, compared to three or four PCI Express slots supported on competitive servers by Dell, HP and IBM.

Mentor Graphics, Oregon State University and the San Diego Supercomputer Center are among customers currently testing the Sun Fire X2250 server in an HPC environment.

Sun offers an array of services to optimize Sun Fire X2250 and Sun Fire X4250 server performance and computing workloads, including heterogeneous support, HPC services and training.

The Sun Fire X2250 and X4250 servers powered by Intel Xeon 5200 and 5400 series processors are shipping now, with entry-level pricing starting at $1,495 and $3,195, respectively.

The Sun Startup Essentials program is designed to help eligible U.S. based startup companies get to market faster while conserving cash. The program offers its members a range of discounted Sun products and services, including its award-winning Sun Fire x64 servers and Sun Fire servers with CoolThreads technology, and Sun’s select StorageTek line of products, including modular disk arrays, NAS and tape storage products.

In addition to offering products and services to eligible U.S. based members, Sun also is offering free technical advice via email and access to free software such as Apache, MySQL and Perl (AMP) optimized to run on the Solaris 10 OS. Program members can also select the web hosting infrastructure from Sun partners based on Sun technologies along with services they need, in case they choose not to build and operate the infrastructure themselves. Sun develops technologies designed to power comprehensive markets, in more than 100 countries.

Web Hosting, Virtual Server Environment Protegrity Firewall Application, Awarded

Stamford, Connecticut - (The Hosting News) - August 22, 2008 - Data Security Management solutions firm, Protegrity Corporation’s Defiance Threat Management System, has been selected as the winner of the 2008 Best Products and Services Award.

The solution was named as the best web application firewall (WAF) in Network Products Guide’s Reader Trust Awards. Gordon Rapkin, CEO for Protegrity remarked, ”We are extremely pleased to have been recognized in the Reader Trust Awards as the best web application firewall. Defiance Threat Management System is a critical part of a complete security solution that ensures customers can defend their web applications against a growing number of attacks from increasingly sophisticated hackers.”

According to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, over 236 million data records have been compromised since January 2005. Approximately half of those records were compromised by hacking. Today’s hackers are more organized and have a clear sense of purpose — stealing sensitive data.

The need to protect web applications form hackers is further reinforced by Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) section 6.6 which requires organizations that accept credit card payments to either complete a full software code review of all of their web applications or deploy a web application firewall. Achieving PCI compliance compels organizations to not only protect their web applications but also protect their stored data, restrict access to sensitive data, and maintain an information security policy.

Phil Dinsmore, General Manager of Web Application Security for Protegrity added, ”Web applications are unfortunately too easy to exploit. Anyone with a browser has an entry point into unprotected applications and the data they use. Protegrity’s web application firewall, Defiance Threat Management System, combines enterprise class performance and configuration options to detect threats, block attacks, and generate application security alerts and reports.”

Defiance Threat Management System operates as an in-line gateway or out-of-band monitor. It can be deployed as software, a soft appliance, a hardware appliance or any combination of the three. The ability to be a completely ‘green’ solution, coupled with unparalleled deployment flexibility, make it an ideal choice for shared hosting and virtual server environments.

Protegrity delivers centralized data security management solutions that protect sensitive information from acquisition to deletion across the enterprise. Protegrity’s customers maintain complete protection over their data and business by employing software and solutions specifically designed to encrypt data, safeguard web applications, and manage and report on security policy.

The company’s singular focus is on developing solutions that protect data. Protegrity employees are security technology specialists with deep expertise in encryption, key management, web application firewalls and security policy in distributed environments. Maximize security with minimal business impact with Protegrity’s Defiance Suite, the high performance, transparent solution optimized for the dynamic enterprise.

R1Soft Web Hosting Software Provider, Releases Windows 2.0 Application

Houston, Texas - (The Hosting News) - August 19, 2008 - Developer of near-continuous data protection products for Linux and Windows, R1Soft, has
released a public beta version of its Windows 2.0 Continuous Data Protection.

As the latest and most feature-rich version of its high performance backup and recovery solution for Windows Servers, R1Soft’s data protection solution is the only software capable of a Continuous Data Protection style backup for both Windows and Linux servers.

The new Windows 2.0 CDP agent significantly expands the scale and reach of data protection technologies for Windows servers by offering a variety of key features, including Bare-Metal Restore, Open File backups, and backup windows reduced to minutes using CDP synchronization technology. The new Windows 2.0 CDP tools add support for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.

David Wartell, Vice President, R1Soft division, BBS Technologies, Inc. noted, ”While R1Soft happens to be the only Continuous Data Protection solution for Linux servers, the Windows market has long been familiar with CDP technology. Typically what we see with other Windows CDP software is that it requires extensive training and support from the vendor and in some products it is impossible to use without the customer investing in specialized Storage Area Network hardware. Most IT environments are mixed-platform, and the market wants an easy to use high performance backup tool for both Windows and Linux. Most IT administrators who try our CDP software for Linux say, ‘Wow that was so easy. R1Soft reduced my Linux server backup window from 8 hours to 15 minutes. Can you do that for Windows too?”’

R1Soft Continuous Data Protection software runs cross-platform allowing IT administrators to manage their environment of choice. Linux servers running R1Soft CDP are even able to provide CDP services for Windows servers.

Windows 2.0 CDP agent is available as a downloadable upgrade at no additional charge for existing R1Soft Windows customers.

Founded in 2003, R1Soft is a provider of disk-based backup solutions. The company’s customer list includes some of the world’s largest hosting providers. R1soft products provide Continuous Data Protection (CDP) for over 85,000 mission-critical Linux and Windows servers worldwide. In November, 2007 R1Soft was acquired by BBS Technologies, Inc.
