‘Mike” Delivers Control for Java Based Development Projects

Monday, March 29th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – Cloud based service, Mike and the Ceiling (“Mike”) now delivers control and consistency for Java based development projects across distributed software teams using hardened security and a consistent web interface. Now software teams are relieved of the burden of managing their build environments whilst ensuring that all developers, wherever they are based, have the same consistent view of the build and related tools.

By implementing agile-style continuous integration where the application is built automatically as the source code components are updated, teams have instant feedback on the status of their application. Integration and functional tests can be run automatically and key team members instantly notified by email of the results. Reports can be viewed using a simple and secure web interface.

“Mike (www.mikeci.com) has been developed from our extensive expertise in helping blue chip Enterprises to maximise the efficiency of their software development efforts”, says Gary Parlett, CEO of Mike. “This service delivers real cost savings through better resourcing whilst improving the quality of software development. It is fundamental to 21st century application development, especially where outsourcing or off-shoring is part of your development strategy”.

Mike is a new service utilising Amazon EC2 secure hosting to provide flexible build support for small teams through to unlimited Enterprise sized development departments. As Mike is hosted in the Cloud, software teams around the globe can access the service 24/7 and always be sure they have the latest build status and tools.

Mike implements detail security features to protect valuable IP and software assets and each build environment is clean and securely ‘sand-boxed’. All the source code processed by a build is accessed using token-based authentication over encrypted channels. All network communication within Mike is encrypted using either key or token-based authentication and all outbound network access from a Mike build is transparently proxied and validated. Mike supports Ant, Maven and Eclipse development environments and, thanks to the security features of Mike the full range of Ant tasks and Maven plug-ins are available as part of a build. Ant-based projects can now use Maven dependency management for their binary artifacts and there is support for Maven Ant Tasks (v2.1.0). Java source code can reside in public or private Subversion or Github based repositories. Mike can start, stop and deploy to application servers and containers such as Apache Tomcat (v5 and 6), Jetty or Glassfish as part of the build process. Mike can support integration and functional tests, using frameworks such as HtmlUnit or JWebUnit and utilise additional processes as part of a build, such as bash scripts and other non-Java based tooling.

“The challenges of delivering a service that provides flexibility with security are considerable,” Said Adam Leggett, Chief Architect at Mike, “We have developed a platform that can grow with teams and through which we can support a wide range of development environments over time. And we have provided an online demo and trial that takes only around 20 minutes to experience the fundamentals of what Mike offers,” he added.

“PPC Keyword Research and the B2B Buyer” Live webcast at Search Marketing Now

Monday, March 29th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – Search Marketing Now will present a free webcast “PPC Keyword Research and the B2B Buyer”, featuring Gord Hotchkiss On Tuesday, April 6, at 1 PM EDT.

“PPC Keyword Research and the B2B Buyer” – April 6Registration is open and more information is available at Search Marketing Now.

B2B search marketing is very different from B2C, but not for the reasons one might expect. Three of the biggest challenges for B2B search marketer are:

1. There’s often no common vocabulary for keyword selection – Unlike many consumer categories, where both vendors and prospects agree on the keywords to be used, in B2B, often marketers use their internal “best guess” to set up their keyword lists. This can lead to a disconnect right from the start.

2. Shifting roles through the process – Unlike consumer scenarios, where progression tends to be more linear, in many B2B purchases there’s a significant shift in the people involved and the intent part way through a B2B purchase process. Search marketing strategy must accommodate this shift and provide relevant information to buyers on both sides of it.

3. Risk is the Primary Driver of Intent – In big ticket B2B purchases, risk mitigation is the primary goal of the buyer. There is little or no reward to offset risk. B2B search campaigns have to align with this reality, from the keyword selection through ad messaging to the intended paths on the website.
This webcast will use research from Enquiro’s BuyerSphere Project to show how marketers can gain a better understanding of prospect intent to significantly improve their search strategy.

Gord Hotchkiss will share key findings, including:

How to ensure your search ad messaging is designed to mitigate risk and prompt engagement
How to recognize the “Risk Gap” shift and bridge the gap for prospects

Following the main presentation, Wordstream will provide examples of successful use of keyword research in B2B search marketing.

Gord Hotchkiss, CEO of Enquiro, is renowned for his eye-tracking studies and for his understanding of searcher behavior. He writes SearchEngineLand.com’s “Just Behave” column and is the author of the new book, The Buyersphere. He is past Chairman and Director of Search Engine Marketing Professionals Organization (SEMPO)and past co-chair of the research and membership committees.

This webcast is sponsored by WordStream. WordStream provides paid and organic search management solutions, including keyword research and organization tools for continuously optimizing and expanding pay-per click marketing campaigns. PEER 1 Hosting calls to hosting industry to share NPSTM scores

Friday, March 26th, 2010

(The Hosting News)- Managed hosting provider PEER 1 Hosting Network Enterprises, Inc. (TSX: PIX) has challenged other  hosting providers, challenging them to publish their Net Promoter ScoresTM (NPS).

To improve transparency over service quality for buyers and users of hosting services, PEER 1 Hosting believes all serious hosting service providers should measure and publish their NPSTM score to enable a simple comparison of customer satisfaction. PEER 1 Hosting’s own Net Promoter ScoreTM has been calculated at +36. The industry average in IT services is 7.

NPSTM methodology provides an objective analysis of customer satisfaction by measuring the extent to which customers are willing to recommend the service to a friend or a colleague. Pioneered by Fred Reichheld in 2003 in the Harvard Business Review article, ‘The one number you need to grow(1), NPSTM identifies both promoters and detractors of a business by asking customers ‘How likely are you to recommend us?’. By subtracting one from the other, the Net Promoter ScoreTM can be calculated to present a customer-defined and comparable measure of service quality.

Dominic Monkhouse, Managing Director at PEER 1 Hosting UK commented: “Ultimately, hosting isn’t about hardware and data centers; it’s about service, uptime and quality. NPSTM is a simple way for customers to evaluate which hosting providers are performing at what level. PEER 1 Hosting is accountable to its customers; it’s time for the hosting industry to stand up and be counted too.”

John Hughes, Director of Customer Experience Accreditation and Awards, and Managing Director, Customer Service Network welcomed the initiative from PEER 1 Hosting: “In a service-led environment, the NPSTM can be hugely powerful in providing a benchmark. I would encourage anyone who is responsible for buying hosting services to ask those companies that they are considering doing business with for their NPSTM score. If they cannot provide a recent report, then this suggests they are not proud of it or worse still, they don’t care.”

1&1 and Zoho Partner to Deliver Cloud Solutions

Friday, March 26th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – 1&1 Internet and Zoho recently announced a partnership to make standard cloud solutions available to small and medium sized companies as well as private users. After years of experience developing high quality, online products for private and commercial users, both companies are familiar with the specific conditions and requirements in different national markets. This expertise will now flow into joint projects connecting the worlds of hosting and cloud applications.

The first result of the partnership will be the new 1&1 Online Office, scheduled to launch in Germany and the UK in the first half of 2010, with more countries to follow soon. 1&1 Online Office will offer users a comprehensive office suite consisting of word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications that run entirely in a user’s web browser.
There will be no software – other than a browser – to install locally.
All data will be stored centrally and securely on servers in 1&1’s high performance data centres, thus enabling access at any time and even while on the road.

Oliver Mauss, CEO of 1&1 Internet said, “Market experts and analysts expect rapidly increasing demand for cloud applications in the coming years. As an internationally operating hosting provider, we see an extensive and lasting growth potential in this field. And we’d like to position ourselves in this segment at an early stage. Besides 1&1 Online Office, we can imagine adding other Zoho applications to our portfolio in the future”.

Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho Corporation said, “Roughly 30 per cent of our users are based in Europe, and we’re eager to serve even more users there. As the largest web hosting company worldwide, 1&1 has a tremendous presence in Europe. They’re an ideal partner to help bring a comprehensive online application suite to a broader European audience looking for high performance that doesn’t break the bank. We are eager to see this alliance grow”.

QuadraNet, Inc. Plans Construction of Additional Datacenter Plans for Dallas

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

(The Hosting News)- The location marks a large leap in QuadraNet’s footprint in the United States as it is the first location of multiple across the country, in order to meet the demand for geographically dispersed datacenter solutions. Numerous installations around the USA allows for customers to fulfill their load balancing, redundancy, and geo-targeted requirements from a single company, allowing for ease of management and streamlined business processes.

“Dallas is the first of multiple planned locations for QuadraNet. We understand the needs of our customers and are working hard to meet them. Multiple locations will provide our customers with the ability to target localized regions of the country, thereby increasing speeds and lowering latency as services will be delivered more locally to their user bases. In addition to the localized speed improvements, our customers will be able to operate mirror copies of their websites and applications hosted in completely diverse locations for the ultimate in redundancy, load balancing, and backups.” says Christopher Gotzmann, Vice President of QuadraNet.

QuadraNet’s goal is to provide geographically dispersed datacenters which are backed by automated processes and features, allowing their customers to have a truly global and virtualized datacenter available to them. All of their datacenter locations are centrally linked via the “Private Network”, which is a routed internal network which connects a customer’s servers as if they were physically cabled to each other locally. This Private Network spans across not only individual datacenters, but across the entire QuadraNet network of datacenters based across the United States. Private Network traffic is completely secure to the customer’s account with only servers under that customer’s account having access to the network. All dedicated servers with QuadraNet are equipped with the Private Network on their secondary network interfaces.

QuadraNet provides a large automated features and processes tool chest which allows system administrators and server management parties to troubleshoot and maintain their dedicated servers as if they were physically on-site at the datacenter. QuadraNet is coined “The Ultimate Datacenter” based on the reasoning that they provide system administrators with the power and control not normally available with a standard dedicated server provider. A short list of these features includes KVM over IP, Operating System Recovery Boot, Remote Controlled Power Cycling and the “Private Network” which allows customers to create a virtualized datacenter.

Some of their features also aim to automate and streamline commonly requested changes into on-demand and instant upgrades. For example, dedicated server customers have access to on-the-fly network port speed configurations from 10Mbps, 100Mbps to 1,000Mbps as well as Automated Operating System Re-Installs.

CloudLinux Research Demonstrates Critical Performance Issues

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – White Paper provides insights into study methodology and CloudLinux’s innovative technology that solves critical performance issues for Hosting Providers and Data Centers

Princeton, NJ (March 24, 2010) – CloudLinux Inc., an innovative software company dedicated to serving the needs of hosting service providers, today releases a technical white paper, “How to Squeeze More Efficiency Out of Your Infrastructure.” The paper details current inadequacies in the hosting arena and how the CloudLinux Operating System (OS) effectively addresses these issues. In particular, with CloudLinux technology, the study proceeds to explain how web hosts can double the density of their shared hosting servers while simultaneously improving server stability.

The proprietary research conducted by CloudLinux was meant to provide evidence of the inadequacies of existing server management techniques. Included is a detailed analysis of the two research methodologies used: a statistical analysis of server log activity and a survey of the experiences of real world hosting providers.

The study details the impact on –hosting providers who, today, lack the ability to optimize the number of clients on a server due to risk of increased instability. Key findings include:

46.6% of web hosts reported they experienced downtime due to a lone site at least a few times a month

Frequently a single site or a very small number of sites utilize a disproportionate amount of resources:

Top 1% of sites are responsible for 39% of the static requests (on average) to the server

Top 5% of sites are responsible for 65% of static requests (on average) to the server

On 25% of the servers analyzed, top 1% of the sites are responsible for 50% or more of dynamic requests to the server

Reasons for server spikes which can bring down an entire server can include:

One badly executed script on one site

New software introduced to a site

To mitigate some of these risks, many hosting providers keep server capacity at 60% or below in order to maintain stability, but they sacrifice optimizing their infrastructure in the process. This is the problem that CloudLinux solves with its new Lightweight Virtual Environmentâ„¢ (LVE) technology. It has the capability to vastly improve the density of shared hosting servers, often enabling hosting providers to double server density without sacrificing stability. The benefits of this approach include:

Properly manage hundreds or thousands of websites simultaneously on one server without risking server stability

Prevent one site from affecting the performance of other sites on a server

Gain control and manage server resources down to an individual site level, versus a server level

More quickly identify sites which are not functioning properly without running the risk of a single site slowing or taking down a whole server

The release of this white paper comes at a critical time. With the growing demand by websites to run a new array of rich applications and cloud services in a stable server environment, data centers and hosting providers are challenged to provide the quality service these customers require, cost effectively. With the CloudLinux LVE technology, hosting providers can introduce a new level of flexibility that optimizes their infrastructure. “Based on my many years of experience in the hosting arena, I am thrilled to show how CloudLinux LVE technology closes the market gap that exists in the web hosting environment by outperforming the standard OS,” states Igor Seletskiy, CEO and Founder of CloudLinux. “As our white paper outlines, it is now possible to achieve a balanced, stable server environment along with improving density of shared hosting servers through a well-supported Linux version specifically optimized for web hosters.”

CloudLinux OS is an innovative cost-effective solution designed to improve control in the shared hosting and data center arena, while simultaneously increasing control and stability, as well as improving overall performance. Open-Xchange Signs Reseller Agreement with Softline

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Strategic Partnership with Softline expands Open-Xchange’s reach to Russia and CIS

NUREMBERG, Germany / MOSCOW, Russia – Open-Xchange, provider of business-class open source collaboration software, announced today at CloudConf 2010 Moscow (www.cloudconf.ru) an agreement with Softline, the leading software reseller in Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), to resell on-premises and hosted Open-Xchange.

Softline expands its portfolio with Open-Xchange and now can sell it to enterprises, educational institutions and government authorities of all sizes. Softline now can offer customers either: Open-Xchange hosted by Softline; or on-premises installed and run on the customer’s own computers – and the ability to switch between the types of operation at any time.

“Both on-premises and hosted Open-Xchange use exactly the same software code. This is unique in the entire software industry as it provides our customers with unmatched freedom to choose their favorite deployment model any time they like – with no migration effort,” said Anton Salov, head of Softcloud. “While small- and medium-size enterprises tend to benefit from groupware technology deployed as SaaS (Software as a Service) without an initial investment, or on-going administration, larger organizations mostly prefer to integrate their communication solutions into an existing IT infrastructure and run it in-house.”

Softline will offer Open-Xchange through Softline’s new SaaS marketplace called “Softcloud,” which provides maximum data security for white label partners and end users. Softline hosts the server hardware in secure, professional data centers and takes care of performance, scalability, system maintenance, security updates and support. In the SaaS model, customers subscribe to applications, typically on a monthly basis, versus purchasing them. The end user does not need to invest in hardware and software, nor does it require its own staff for the installation and administration of Open-Xchange.

Also Softline provides on-premises collaboration solutions using Open-Xchange´s Server Editions as lower cost alternatives to Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Exchange and SharePoint. Open-Xchange´s on-premises products – available as an out-of-the-box software appliance for SMBs or Open-Xchange Server Edition for larger enterprises – can be easily integrated into existing Microsoft-based environments, thereby ensuring that Microsoft Active Directory can be kept with no changes.

“We are looking forward to extending our sales into growing markets in Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia, partnering with Softline, the leading software reseller in Russia and CIS,” said Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange. “Softline is another great example of how innovative reseller partners extend their existing software licensing business.”

Open-Xchange groupware provides the basis for efficient teamwork. It combines e-mail, appointment, contact and task management with intelligent document management. Open-Xchange recently introduced an innovative groupware concept called “Social OX,” which can aggregate e-mail from Google, Yahoo and many others into a folder in Open-Xchange, plus automatically add and incorporate contact details from social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Xing to the Open-Xchange address book. To simplify teamwork and project work with external business partners, Open-Xchange can share contacts, calendar information and documents securely outside the enterprise and those users do not require an Open-Xchange account.

LogicMonitor Launches New Comprehensive Virtualization Monitoring

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

(The Hosting News) – LogicMonitor has recently released new comprehensive, fully automated virtualization monitoring for Citrix XenServer, VMware vSphere 4/ESX Server, and Amazon’s EC2. The new release builds on existing support for database and web servers including MySQL and Apache, and combines with LogicMonitor’s trademark ease-of-use, LogicMonitor is now the go-to solution for monitoring any virtualized environment.

In a report released this month, analyst firm Garner estimated that by the end of 2012, more than half of eligible workloads will have been virtualized. “With so many companies moving parts of their operations to virtualized environments, it’s critical that they have an effective, easy-to-use monitoring solution in order to head off problems before they start,” said LogicMonitor CEO Steve Francis. “With this new release, LogicMonitor Hosted Monitoring is the most easy-to-use and comprehensive solution out there.”

While virtualization vendors are improving the provisioning and management of VMs, that is only half the battle: every VM launched requires monitoring, and while the virtualization vendors may provide some monitoring of raw functionality, only LogicMonitor automatically:
Is aware when new VMs are spawned
Can figure out what those VMs do (eg: databases, web servers, virtual load balancers, etc.)
Can monitor them appropriately, at the application level, down to the OS and the underlying infrastructure
Ties in to all of the components of the system, offering unmatched visibility into the origins of any performance issue
Can set thresholds automatically, and route alerts appropriately.

LogicMonitor is currently offering a free, 14-day trial of its hosted monitoring service (virtualization monitoring, go here: http://www.logicmonitor.com/monitoring/virtualization/.
