(The Hosting News) – Microsoft has a date set for the rollout of Windows 8.1: October 18th.

The tech giant confirmed the move on Wednesday, noting the OS update would begin launching in New Zealand, then spreading worldwide.

Windows 8.1’s release follows lackluster sales for the tablet-centric OS Microsoft launched just last year.

“Windows 8.1 continues the vision we began with Windows 8 and is an example of our commitment to continuous innovation and improvement for our customers. And Windows 8.1 brings many improvements in areas like personalization, Internet Explorer 11, search which is powered by Bing, built-in apps including a few new ones, an improved Windows Store experience, and cloud connectivity with SkyDrive (and much more) that people will enjoy,” explained Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc via a blog post.

Microsoft previously launched a preview version of Windows 8.1.

Windows 8 usage has been rather low despite slightly increasing in the recent past. According to statistics released by Netmarketshare in July, Windows 8 encompassed just 5.4% of the market while Windows 7 stood at 44.49% and Windows XP stood at 37.19%.
