(The Hosting News) – In a bid to expand its cloud portfolio, tech giant IBM on Tuesday announced its intent it acquire cloud-centric company SoftLayer.

Making the move, the company cited its intention “to accelerate adoption of cloud computing in the enterprise.”

“With SoftLayer, IBM will accelerate the build-out of our public cloud infrastructure to give clients the broadest choice of cloud offerings to drive business innovation,” commented Erich Clementi, Senior VP of the company’s Technology Services via a press release.

Meanwhile, SoftLayer CEO Lance Crosby signaled the acquisition would help expand his company’s footprint with “born-on-the-cloud companies” in addition to giving SoftLayer more strength in the “large enterprise market.”

“The compelling opportunity is connecting IBM’s geographic reach, industry expertise and IBM’s SmartCloud breadth with our innovative technology. Together SoftLayer and IBM expand their reach to new clients – both born-on-the-cloud and born-in-the-enterprise,” Crosby stated.

Financial details of the buy were not made immediately available. The transaction will require regulatory clearances before receiving final approval.

SoftLayer’s infrastructure includes 13 data centers serving 21 thousand customers with services like dedicated servers, CloudLayer, management, storage and more.
