Facebook Employees Hit with Malware Exploit

(The Hosting News) – Facebook hasn’t really had to endure many problems from the wrath of hackers – but on Friday, the top social site detailed a sophisticated attack that threatened its network.

The issue was apparently discovered in January and affected the company following the visiting of a mobile developer website by what was described as a “handful” of Facebook employees.

“The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops. The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software. As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day,” commented Facebook via a blog post.

Despite the threat, the social network insisted no evidence had shown user data to have been compromised – something sure to help everyone breathe a sigh of relief following the attack.

Facebook also noted it worked to share information regarding the malware with others possibly affected by the same hostile platform.

The malware itself was related to a Java vulnerability known as “zero-day” – something previously patched by Oracle just earlier this month.
