BitTorrent Sync Takes on the Personal Cloud

(The Hosting News) – Could a new offering challenge the practicality of cloud-based storage?

Recently announced, the product known as BitTorrent Sync relies on peer-to-peer technology for automatic file syncing.

“Sync unlimited files between your own devices, or share a folder with friends and family to automatically sync anything,” reads the product’s description on labs.bittorrent.com.

According to a BBC report, Sync differs from cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox by eliminating “the need to upload data to a third party’s computer servers.”

“Since Sync is based on P2P [peer-to-peer technology] and doesn’t require a pit-stop in the cloud, you can transfer files at the maximum speed supported by your network,” stated BitTorent, according to the BBC.

The technology also makes use of encrypted keys to safeguard data. Sync has been in development for some time and only recently became available for public use.

BitTorrent technology has increasingly become popular for use in an often criticized area – illegal file sharing. It is, however, important to note such l activity is initiated by users and not the P2P provider.
