(The Hosting News) – Facebook-owned Instagram on Thursday made its largest change in some time, adding the ability for users to take videos on the popular service.

“Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Video on Instagram and bring you another way to share your stories. When you go to take a photo on Instagram, you’ll now see a movie camera icon. Tap it to enter video mode, where you can take up to fifteen seconds of video through the Instagram camera,” stated the company via its blog.

Users are able to select video stills as cover images along with the choice of fifteen filters.

Facebook’s expansion of Instagram comes in the wake of rising popularity of Vine – another video sharing application backed by Twitter. Unlike Instragram, however, Vine’s video capturing only lasts six seconds.

And while these two services may seem destined for competition, they might be able to coexist.

“There’s a lot of room for both Vine and Instagram video, at least in the short term,” explained Forrester Research analyst Zachary Reiss-Davis in a PCWorld report. He continued, “This might be a case where the site that creates the best content wins, and the major social platform providers are all of a sudden becoming content providers.”

Facebook announced its purchase of Instagram for $1 billion in April of last year.
