Backing up your website is one of the most important things you can do. You may think or hope nothing bad will ever happen to it, but there are no guarantees. Having a backup ensures that you can get your site up and running in the event that something goes wrong or when you need to roll back changes. cPanel has a built-in backup system that can help you simplify the task.

The “Backups” section and “Backup Wizard” are both found in the “Files” section of your cPanel home screen. For basic one-time backups, use the backup wizard.

A full backup will backup every part of your site and allow you to download it to your computer or to a remote location using FTP (file transfer protocol) or SCP (secure copy). The backup file name will include the date of the backup and end in the .tar.gz extension, indicating that it is a tarball archive and is compressed with gzip.

With partial backups, you can choose to backup a portion, such as your Home Directory, MySQL databases, and/or Email Forwarders & Filters.

If your web host has enabled it, you may also have system backups. These are automated backups created by your system and stored monthly, weekly, and/or daily, depending on the settings. You can download any of those backups by clicking the appropriate button in the system backups section.

Backups are essential for security and as insurance against any mishaps or disasters that may occur. cPanel’s backup solution is a good way to get basic backups of your data, but you may decide you need something more sophisticated, particularly if you have frequently changing data and want a remote automated system.
