View Full Version : Looking for email hosting and online storage. Is Rackspace the answer?
JohnEnglish 11-19-2010, 01:52 AM I have 5 domains that I'd like to setup email hosting and online storage for. Each domain only has one user and each user will need to access their email and files from several different personal computers.
I've been looking at a combination of Rackspace Email and Rackspace Cloud Drive. I like Rackspace Email since it can sync up email between multiple copies of Outlook and seems to play well with mobile devices; plus it's only $2/month. I was also looking at Rackspace Cloud Drive since it offers 10 GB of storage space per user at only $4/month (I don't want the storage pooled).
I looked into Google Apps but all the users will be using Outlook and getting email synced between computers using Outlook and Google Apps is a pain. Even if you get their Premier Edition the Outlook plugin leaves a lot to be desired.
Anyone have any other suggetions to Rackspace?
rrdns 11-29-2010, 01:00 PM As far as I know, rackspace offers whatever you want at a comparatively cheap price. I have seen stuff like xdrive etc before but those cost too much are more for file storage than someone who can provide email hosting as well as storage solutions. So rackspace is a good choice as their service is professional.

you can try Google Apps as well, In fact Google Apps will be more helpful for you.

The Outlook integration (even with the premier edition) isn't all that great and their cloud storage doesn't work like I want it too. I just want want a "Drop Box" like set up where there's a folder that you can drag files to store in the cloud. Google offers Google Docs but that's not what I want.

May I know what's the features make rackspace email superior to google mail for outlook sync? Both of them should have the same pop3/imap access, seems most email clients operation based those two protocols and should perform at the same level.

JohnEnglish 12-08-2010, 06:27 PM I've never been able to get Google Apps working properly to sync up emails between devices. It either downloads the same emails over and over again or skips them entirely. I tried searching the Google App forums but got the usual "you can't complain becuase it's free" response that I'm used to when dealing with Google services.
I tried Google Apps Premier since that comes with an Outlook plugin that's supposed to automate the syncing process. However, I had a ton of problems with it too. A quick search shows that I'm not alone in my frustrations with the Outlook plugin.
That's why I'm looking to go with a proper hosted email solution.
NelsonT 12-08-2010, 09:14 PM Quite interesting of rackspace outlook sync. I may try in my spare time.
I did sync gmail via imap to local Thunderbird, and really a mess.
If purely web based, I will recommend fastmail.fm
No ideas who does well in outlook sync. Would like to know as well.

dragon2611 12-12-2010, 03:43 PM Rackspace's sync plugin didn't work with outlook 2010 last time I checked (they may have since updated it)
The service itself however is pretty good, although in the end I decided It didn't quite do everything I wanted and ended up migrating my mailbox over to Rackspace's hosted exchange offering.
The nice thing is you can have both types of mailboxes on the same domain if you need more than one mailbox and not everyone needs the full functionality of exchange.
ninkynonk 01-20-2011, 05:26 AM After you've decided would you please write a review of your experience after 1 month. It would be much appreciated.

HostForAsia 01-25-2011, 12:00 AM I used Google Apps for myself and some companies, it worked great, so it's not a pain.
I also used http://outlook.com, it's hosted exchange, comes with tons of storage and it's free.
