Hi,

a few weeks back i found a webhost through this forum - itranquil.net - and was quite amazed by their value plans. I tried them out, and must say what they offer for that kinda price can't be beaten and their support is also quite fast. Now the problem i've got is that my domains gimme gateway timeouts and dns errors all over the place.

Jumping on & offline like mad...and just recently i discovered that i'm losing like 2/3 of my email, because i sent about 80 emails out this last 3 days, and a lot of people told me over the phone that they sent me a mail but i never received it :/

Anyhow, their tech advisor doesn't seem to know what the problem could be - i've changed registrars even, still the same thing. They gave me 2 extra name servers to add, got 4 nameservers now, still the same thing.

And also, for example when my site www.sexybones.com is online, then sexybones.com without the www or a handful of other subdomains i have there would be offline. Or for example i can't connect to ftp.sexybones.com but can get on a subdomain frusts.sexybones.com

I'm really tired of this and itranquil seem very willing to solve the problem but somehow nobody finds the solution...Anyone here that this sounds familiar to and could solve my problem?

I can access your site with & without www. However two nameservers [ ns2.privservers.com & ns2.itranquil.com] didn't work

Well, over here both sexybones.com and www.sexybones.com comes out fine here. Actually each time you change nameservers, there might be some lack and at times the changeover might cause a period where your site is seen as offline. It will take about 24 to 48 hours to realign. Some mails during that changeover might be directed to the former host and some to the new or just some lost in cyberspace.

As for the emails getting lost, it does happened but not all the time and not so huge bunch of them. Some can get delayed, the longest I had denied was about 22 days but that is rare. It is hard to predict how things happens. Ask your web host to check the mail queue, there are some times in which they just got 'trapped' in the queue and need to be manually sent out.

There is also the possibility that the host did not set up a Reverse DNS (RDns) which may be important because some servers might not receive emails if they cannot have that record.

Pointing in multiple name servers does not quite solve a lot of issues because if those DNS are not updates with the new information such as subdomains and so on, they might still get inaccesible.

I just did a http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsreport.ch?domain=sexybones.com

And it seems that one of your DNS is not working. Got the following error :-

ERROR: Some of your nameservers listed at root did not respond. The ones that did not respond are:

216.180.250.96

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the fast replies! Wow this is an excellent forum

I know the changes take up to 48 hours, therefore at the moment it's been actually about 5 days that the latest changes have been made (added the 2 extra nameservers) - so this updating process couldn't be a factor. And i have had the problems for about 2 weeks now in total - nonstop

And the problems with the dns server being down is switching constantly that's the weird part and i guess the problem for the different subdomains being up or down, once in a while another dns server just timeouts when i ping them.

I'll defenitely ask them about the rDns and the mail queue

Hope this gets resolved soon, and with you guys on my side, things are looking good :]

Let us know how it goes.

Well, i asked them all those things...and they replied that i should backup my account and they would recreate a fresh one for me, now that's all done - things were good then for the first few hours but now are back to the usual hassle again. ftp.sexybones.com is down (cannot resolve) but my main site is still up - www.sexybones.com

I'm out of ideas here, and they also seem to be as they stated i'm the only one having these problems...well what do you guys think, should i move hosts or try another x days/weeks and try to figure this one out?

*sigh*

Im in sydney & can view your site. I'm with them also i would stay they have been trying to help you & the support is fast. Who did you get your domain from?

SexyBones

registered it first at domaindirect (tucows opensrs) and now because of the problems transferred the domain through godaddy.com - but the same errors are still there.

I know they're trying to help me and i really appreciate this, but if neither me or itranquil can find the problem or even better the solution...i don't know - hard call

It is a tough call but I guess uptime is important and it might just be that your network and theirs do not get along very well.

I am able to ping ftp.sexybones.com

Pinging ftp.sexybones.com [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX] with 32 bytes of data:

Ping statistics for XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 272ms, Maximum = 290ms, Average = 282ms

I could ping the www. , without www and the frusts. It works fine here. I really do not know what to make of it. Your ISP ?

yeah, i know things go up and down constantly - i'm currently not being able to connect to ftp.sexybones.com but all the others are up and running, but remember you had the dns error earlier on? Now you'll probably have none, and over about an hour or so there will be different ones again...

My isp could be the problem, were it not that i have tried on 3 different connections (telenet , belnet & skynet) on about 10 different pc's and 2 macs actually all on different locations, and have found different domains having dns errors on each connection. And also friends of mine from around the globe had the same errors.

There's not much i can do wrong from my side - fill in 4 nameservers with my registrar is all i did...

So i'm guessing it's just some network conflict somewhere, deep in cyberspace that just doesn't like my nickname probable LOL

Haa haa. Well, who knows why things happen the way they do.

If you could get to the bottom of that, you probably would have solved the mystery of life .

I think the problem is the configuration of their nameservers !

Here are the nameservers (from a rare successful DNS lookup @skynet):

sexybones.com. 11856 IN NS ns2.privservers.com.
sexybones.com. 11856 IN NS ns.privservers.com.
sexybones.com. 11856 IN NS ns1.itranquil.com.
sexybones.com. 11856 IN NS ns2.itranquil.com.

The problem is those nameservers don't have a NS record for themselves. Look, when I ask skynet's primary nameserver for the NS record for ns.privservers.com, this is what I get, when I'm lucky that is :) :

sgmork@duvel:~> dig @195.238.2.21 ns.privservers.com NS

; <<>> DiG 9.1.3 <<>> @195.238.2.21 ns.privservers.com NS
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 56955
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 0

;; QUESTION SECTION:
;ns.privservers.com. IN NS

--> see, empty NS record!

The same thing for the other 3 nameservers they're using.

Additionally, and this is probably worse: I'm unable to find nameservers for the domains privservers.com and itranquil.com! For example, the dnsreport.com site will give the following error for itranquil.com: ERROR: One or more of the nameservers listed at the root servers are not listed as NS records at your nameservers. The problem NS records are:
NS2.itranquil.com.
NS1.itranquil.com.

I'm not entirely sure this is the actual problem, but it's highly suspicious I'd say.

In conclusion: if I do a lookup for the nameservers for sexybones.com, I get the 4 nameservers by name, not by ip address (if I do a similar lookup on my domain, I get the nameservers by name AND by ip-address in an additional section). Querying the domains of your nameservers doesn't give an authorative answer, essentially meaning they can't be found.

Hope this helps & good luck ... Maybe you can ask for a 2nd opinion in the DNS section of this board (mind you, I'm by no means an expert, just someone toying around with his linux box ...)

EDIT
Sigh ... I've tried again, and now it seems to work fine ... Seems you can ignore my post ... sorry :(

lol like i said before, it all goes up and down like mad - probably if you check now again, you'll get a different result again :/

Hmm, now that is really odd, given the absurd behaviour of their nameservers.

I wouldn't buy that :dgrin: (doesn't necessarily mean it's their fault though I guess)
