View Full Version : Rackshack looked good, but no Real streaming allowed...so...
timbo 04-30-2001, 02:08 PM Hey Guys,
Has anyone found anything close to the $99 price that Rackshack offer BUT allow Real Audio streaming?
It's a shame they don't allow this.....
BTW - - at work we are using CQHOST'S dedicated server and it's excellent....support has been first rate too.... (but it's too expensive for my own personal budget!)
Cheers!
:cartman:
sonik 04-30-2001, 05:48 PM One of their techs in their chat said that they allow it.
timbo 04-30-2001, 06:11 PM Ahem...that's odd -- I asked that question in the chat room 4-5 hours ago and was told "you can offer downloads, but you cannot stream real audio"
If they COULD stream I would be very happy.....
Chicken 04-30-2001, 09:09 PM I don't see why you can't set it up yourself? http://www.real.com hmmm.
timbo 04-30-2001, 09:14 PM That wasn't the question I asked though was it? ;) Doh! :D
Timbo,
My partner and I just leased a server from RackShack today. They DO let you use real video/audio streaming! ;)
timbo 04-30-2001, 09:39 PM :) Thanks for that.... perhaps the girl was given the wrong information earlier..... okay..... out comes my credit card ;)
SI-Chris 04-30-2001, 10:00 PM Maybe the confusion is due to the fact that there are two different kinds of Real streaming. There is HTTP streaming; *any* Web server can do that (assuming the MIME type for Real is set up correctly). Then there's RealServer streaming. RealServer lets you use dynamic bandwidth (so you don't have to have separate "high bandwidth" and "low bandwidth" versions of your audio/video files), and it also lets you stream "live" content (like a radio station).
RealServer licences are very expensive, and I highly doubt that RackShack is including them in their $99 el-cheap-o server. Again, the way around this is to use HTTP streaming.

I totally agree. They don't give you realserver software nevertheless licenses. They just let you use those files. I don't think those mime types are added in the Cobalt RaQ by default. They should be easy to add though.
Chicken 04-30-2001, 10:35 PM Ohhh, I see, you just want to http stream (gets it now)... any host offers that, and I'd be surprised if you found one that didn't.
Annette 04-30-2001, 10:56 PM Yep, http streaming should be available pretty much anywhere - and if it isn't, just ask them to toss it into the mix as a MIME, and it will be fine. Real Server gives you the nifty bandwidth negotiation, but boy do they make you pay for it. :)
timbo 05-01-2001, 03:21 AM I didn't expect a "proper" Real Server - just the bog standard HTTP streaming that I always use.....
Thanks everyone for all of the help :)
mpalamar 05-01-2001, 02:33 PM There is a free version of the Real Server. I believe it has 25 streams. The server is easy to install on a RAQ.
