a potential hosting customer called to switch his hosting over to our company. his previous host however, went out of business and shut down operations. this customers web site went down with the host. he also unfortunately does not have a copy of the web files. he has tried to locate the defunked host owner with no luck. i looked up the owner of the DNS IP addresses at www.arin.net (the owner of these was different than the owner of the dead ISP). i have been trying to contact this owner.
other than the things we have done above, what else is there to try to find his old web site files?

If the server, in question, is disconnected - it's pretty much a lost cause. Even if you DO find the owner of the company, I seriously doubt he's going to plug the server back in (even if he CAN) and grab a copy of your client's files.
This proves again why it is so important to keep a copy of your website files on your HD.

Hi,
I have ran into the same situation a couple times. Even after using the whois info on the sites host, getting through on the phone only got the reply of: we are out of business, and they wouldn't help the customer.
You would think a host closing shop would at least tell their customers to get a back up made before the servers shut down.

Go to google and see if they have the pages cached. That might get you back some. I think alexa caches pages too but I not sure how to get to them.
At any rate they're pretty much no excuse for not having the pages copied somewhere else. What would they do if they lost a disk for example.

I second the suggestion to try the cached pages at Google....
