View Full Version : Servers
JBIZ718 04-30-2001, 03:13 AM I am president of a web hosting company and am going to take a poll on servers.
We are looking into expanding into a new datacenter, and would like to get some opinions on servers.

allan 04-30-2001, 09:57 AM Penguin Computing (http://www.penguincomputing.com) rocks :).
CRego3D 04-30-2001, 01:12 PM VA-Linux !!!
we have a few now, and I love it :D
DigitalXWeb 04-30-2001, 10:49 PM We build our own but we have used the ones posted above and they have been great. Va Linux is a little pricey but well worth it.
Travis 05-01-2001, 01:38 AM Dell is definitely worth a look. The quality of the servers we've been receiving is very, very good. They're being extremely competitive with pricing these days, so you really can't go wrong.
Vortech 07-21-2001, 07:33 PM Is there any where else to get VAlinux Servers we got a lot of them before they sold out but would like more.. :)
Also are the Penguin Computing servers as good i like the VAlinux a lot.. Is there any thing else like these to per made servers that come close no dell or compaq stuff i hate them.. ;)
DHWWnet 07-21-2001, 07:56 PM I think you can't get them anymore.. PenguinComputing is worth a try, I'm looking at their Relion100s.
and Gateway servers rocks :D
mOOO :)
Vortech 07-21-2001, 08:11 PM Never tryed Gateway as a server for home use it was ok but may be worth looking in to..

Uhuh!!..
Well, Macintosh's are OK for someone that does not know much about computers and can't handle a real PC. *COUGH* girly computer *COUGH*.. :D
Ihoppoet 07-22-2001, 12:34 AM well the good thing about mac, is that they are better than everything else, if you run os9, its unhackable. and did I say they were better than everything else? at least for my needs, I have a g4, but I'm an ARTIST.
Thank you

Well I don't know much about servers for hosting or anything, I'm on a PC, but Jason is right about that at least, for graphics a G4 is a supercomputer. (Of course without virtual pc its worthless, but othwerwise =)
RackMy.com 07-22-2001, 10:01 AM Gateway servers rock Not really, at least from our experience.
We had a customer purchase 125 servers from Gateway and 10 were DOA and would not boot, 7 had major hardware problems, 8 had poor OS installations and a couple others had minor flaws.
We use only Dell servers and love them.
cbaker17 07-22-2001, 01:00 PM To say OS9 is unhackable is rediculous, anything can be hacked, it says something about macs when hackers wont even waste their time trying to hack them ecause very few people use them in a enterprise type environment and for good reason. Although i am impressed to see macs newest line out is using unix as its underlaying operating system. So now the proverbial questions is:
If a mac isnt running a mac os is it really a mac :)
cimshimy 07-22-2001, 04:16 PM Macs are reliable and fast.. I remember a thread a while ago about running Macs as servers, and I even found this site with an ancient Mac being ran as a server. Also, the new OS X running on BSD makes Mac servers more possible than ever.
Mac OS X is a mac os. The kernel is changed, but with every new mac os the kernel is changed, therefore, it is still a Mac. In fact, the BSD they are using was heavily modified (or even rewritten) by them, so it actually is an original kernel. (Darwin, is it?)
