View Full Version : Intel VS AMD Server Platforms
vhedesigns 12-26-2002, 06:23 PM Most web hosting companies use Intel Processors however there are some others such as RackSpace that use AMD.
Does anyone have some good feedback on the two? Which do you use and why do you use that system?
Thanks all help is gladly appreciated.
GoldenTiger 12-26-2002, 07:33 PM AMD vs Intel doesn't matter at all. They're both just as good in terms of reliability, power, operation, etc. Just keep in mind the mhz differences and IPC: a 1.4ghz AMD is about the same as a 1.9ghz P4; 1ghz AMD is = to a P3 1ghz; etc. (roughly 64mhz AMD = 100mhz P4). Check out sites such as hardocp.com, amdmb.com, hardforums.com, and google.com for more info...
James[UH] 12-26-2002, 07:55 PM I choice Intel Pentium III/4 - RedHat & *Nix Server.
Mainly because an Intel cpu generally runs much cooler, and when your in a 1U/2U case, even a degree cooler can mean alot.
Theres about 8 game servers in the rack were in at Telehouse London. They run extremly hot. Dual AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz in 2Us.

The latest P4s have overtaken AMD. Its the memory bandwidth now killing the AMD processors.
Fujiwara Takumi 12-26-2002, 08:51 PM it is not fair to compare AMD and Intel. they are two different beasts. I use AMD cuz theyre cheaper and just as reliable...they run hotter but i live in wiskin so i have some cold to spare :)
i do run a few intels, but only through acquisation, not through choice.
vhedesigns 12-27-2002, 02:17 AM So even with a good amount of cooling the AMD still run hotter?

eh, cooling has nothing to do with how "hot" they run, it just helps them dissipate said heat.
im too tired for an analogy, but, you should get the picture.
mrbling 12-27-2002, 04:45 AM AMDs are NOT suitable for servers with their heat problems.
big no no, I use PIII's and celerons
celeron rules and work great for servers :)

i disagree. I also don't think the heat is problematic, just a slight drawback.
i have a machine here:
www.downshiftonpedestrians.com/slush/heat.jpg
that runs at that temp consistently, its not a server, but it is very reliable even at that whacked out temp. its run that way for a year or two now...so if anything AMDs are stronger machines because they can run through those temps.
but thats a stupid arguement too, so ill retract it.

Celeron for servers
I'm not too sure about that.
Everyday 12-27-2002, 02:00 PM We run AMD servers in 1u cases and do not have any problems. They have been very reliable, fast and inexpensive to operate.
We also run intel servers and have not had many problems with them. They do cost us more to operate though.

nah, it dont matter, its not like they cant handle the demand...its just smaller machinery doing the same thing.
RackNine 12-27-2002, 02:19 PM Thank goodness for 6 month Canadian winters, I just keep the windows open when running AMD :)
Seriously, they're not all that bad. I prefer Intel because they're proven to run better with data-intensive applications (ie: database) though my home PC is an Athlon XP 2200 OC'd up the ying-yang.
Sincerely,
-Matt
