I am looking for hosts who are associated with registrar Tucows.

Not that I particularly like or dislike Tucows, I would just rather not do the domain name transfer.

So could someone give me a few names please.

I would suggest you handle it yourself. It really is easy, even for complete beginners. To register a name, all you need to enter is the name you want to use as the registrant (could be a business or organization name) the address and contact information, and the name and similar information for the administrative and billing contacts. Basically, if you can enter your name, address, phone umber and e-mail address and, of course, credit card information, you can register a name.

Transferring from another registrar is even easier. The instructions on some sites (like 000domains) is easy enough to understand, and you'll get a response in about a half hour if you should find you need any help.

One of the reasons I suggest you handle it yourself is that service as well as pricing varies from one Open SRS RSP to another. One of my clients registered the .net and .org versions with an Open SRS RSP after receiving a solicitation by postal mail. Their rates were the same as NSI's ($35), they did not send him the access information (until I requested it on his behalf) and they set it up as a sub-user so he has limited access to his own domains and cannot transfer them to another profile. I have requested Open SRS transfer them to 000domains.

Even with an Open SRS RSP, you can't be sure you'll get the outstanding service 000domains delivers. The Domain Manager system is so easy to use that you really should take command of your domains. Otherwise, you may pay too much and not receive maximum value.

My appologies. I'm an idiot!

I forgot to mention that I already have a dotcom with them, hence my reluctance to transfer.

So if I'm getting this correctly, you have a domain registered through an OpenSRS registrar and now you need to find a host for that domain, eh?

Simple...
1. Pick *any* host that you like.
2. Go to http://manage.opensrs.net
3. Log into your domain and click last link: Manage Nameservers

There you will see a place for you to modify (add), the nameservers for your new host. Enter info (ns1.newhost.com, etc.), and click Save Configuration.

Note: Your new host will provide you with this information once you sign up, or if you request it.

In about two days (ish, give or take), the domain shold resolve properly, *if* the host has set up the account properly on their servers (DNS servers and web server).

Good to go. Very painless.

This is a bit over my head.

A few weeks ago, I bought a dotcom from a small web outfit in my town.
I later discovered that my registrar was Tucows, not the guy I gave $35 to.
Goes to show you how little I know about this stuff.

I then found a free host called Netfirms. The problem is, if I want to be able to use
my own domain name without the .netfirms attached to it, I have to transfer it to Network Solutions.
This costs money that I'm not inclined to fork out at this time.

A few days ago, I found the website which you posted above, but I could not get in
because I had no password, etc.

The fellow I bought the dotcom from said he would send me that info by e-mail.

But it looks like if I go with a host that is not hooked up with Tucows, I have to do the
transfer thing.

So I would rather go with a host associated with Tucows, and I was hoping that
maybe some of the posters here might know of some.

kaktus,

If your registrar is Tucows, you can choose any host you want! Then you log in to your domain control panel and change the DNS server infomation to the one that the host gave you.

Follow chicken instruction above on how to do that

Once you get these info, you will be able to log in & change the info. So budge that guy who sold you the domain

I totally believe you guys.

I just don't understand why Netfirms tells me that I have to transfer
my dotcom over to Network Solutions.

(I'll go to my e-mail and fetch the message they sent me. Be right back)

This is what I was referring to above. Not all OpenSRS RSPs are the same.

As long as you are lsited as the administrative contact, you can have Open SRS send you the profile login and password even if Netfirms doesn't do it promptly.

You can also contact OpenSRS and have them transfer your domain(s) to another of their RSPs. I requested they do so with my client's 2 domains, and that they be moved to 000domains. I would suggest you do the same. There is no charge for this.

I am so grateful for your help.

This is all very complex for me.

Great people here. Great forum.

Thanks.

I use GKG.net - 10 bucks a year...And Go daddy is only 9 bucks...

i don't know the difference between OpenSRS and the rest..Are either of them OpenSRS?

www.godaddy.com
www.gkg.net

Neither one of them are.

It will be easier on the future to determine that. I have suggested to Open SRS that they have a list of their RSPs and also indicate which ones sell the TUCOWS certificates. They agreed it was a good idea and said they would get a list up as soon as they can.

What exactly is OpenSRS?

What is their role? Are they registrar?

And what does RSP mean?

yeah..what exactly is OpenSRS? I've noticed that the sites you have mention which use OpenSRS are about 3-4 bucks more than the sites I mentioned. Am I getting poor service? I didn't know there were many services provided by the registrar, other than getting your domain name registered...and giving you access to change the dns settings.

If you go to http://opensrs.org you can find detailed answers to your questions.
