As a side project I am looking to build a 1U server and maybe colo it in the future. I'm leaning on using dual MP 2000+ procs because I would use it for gaming. Can some people point me to online guides to build this step by step? I am also interested in configuring RAID, etc to help the overall performance. Recommendations on where to purchase the parts is also appreciated. I checked newegg.com for a 1U case alone and that was over $100. Please show me where the best deals are.
Thanks :)

Hi! The going price for a 1U case is about that price.

find a 1U case on ebay. i got a good deal on one there.
also, for components, check out www.pricewatch.com or try and find a local shop that can give you a good deal.
newegg is not ALWAYS the cheapest, but, they're good people and usually have a very good price. i'd rather spend a few dollars more to order from newegg than try someone who i've never dealt with before on pricewatch.
other than that, you MAY want to consider a powerful dedicated box.

I saw a stainless steel case on eBay for $39 last night. It was pretty ugly, but I suppose it would have done the job. The powerful dedicated box's I have seen advertised here are very expensive. Either a high setup fee or $300 - $700 per month. Most of them would require additional memory and up the cost even more. Could pay to build the entire machine after paying that in a month or two.

How many watts of power for the $100 case?

My mistake...the $100 case I was looking at was more like 3-4U instead of a 1U. I didn't see that a power supply was included in that price.

with a dual MP you'd be better off getting a 2U and putting a good powerful blower in the front.

Thanks for the advice :D Good thing I have seen a few colo offers that will do the same price for a 1U as they do for a 2U. I'll have to find a good colo in the Atlanta area after it's built. I don't like the idea of it being out of state and the memory or something else going bad. Would be better to fix it myself than overpay someone to buy the new part and stick it in.

Yes, I would suggest at least a 2u for dual MP's. Also, you may want to consider looking at www.tomshardware.com to learn how to build a server if you haven't built one before.

Thanks Rob. I checked out the site and saw how to build pc's, b ut nothing was server specific. Hope I'm not overlooking it. Can some more folks give suggestions?
