View Full Version : Truth from Hosting Companies

Exactly. There are lies of comission and lies of omission, the lies that are told and the lies from information that is left out. There is no such thing as a half truth. Truth is indivisible.

Along those lines, I've got something else we could add to the list. Companies that hide their Terms Of Service. The TOS don't appear anywhere near their various offerings and are only trotted out and referred to when someone has violated them. "See, it says right here that unlimited is only 6 gbs a month and you pay $50 for each one over that."

Even some companies that don't commit overt lies have hidden TOS. Things like excessive bandwidth charges are important to know for any company. What a shame that we often have to learn the hard way what to look out for.

Let me start by saying I do NOT want this thread to become a lets slam ANY company.

Ok having said that lets see what "truths" we can expose as general warnings to those seeking a hosting provider.
24 Hour 7 day a week support (translation:- our email server is always online and so is our auto responder)

Unlimited anything (translation:- you mean you thought we meant it had no limits, hell no, read the fine print or your bill)

Our "unique" control panel (translation:- it has our name on it and you can link to it the same as 342,543 others do)

Or free trial month, (this translation varies between "you get one month free, no strings attached" and "you get one month free, and then we bill you until we go out of business, or try to, at least.")

Hi...

Just to remind you not to fall on the easy generalisation patern. It is quite easy to say this means that but you may find yourslef compromised in having no good choice, because for bad hosting companies anything mean anything :)

Of course I admit there is a large part of pub in all of this, but isn't there a large part in any business?

The truth must be said, but in a fashioned way ... anyway one thing to note about hosts...

The only real Unlimited (and i dont mean with add-ons, i mean unlimited) E-Mail aliases. Even these are somewhat limited but the limit is your imagination!

In brief, the tip is: Read, learn, ask and test before you buy.
Good luck!

(note to self: learn english better :I )

Felix is right. Easy on the generalizations. While most (perhaps all of us) would agree that the "unlimited bandwidth" claim is a big lie, there are some resources that are only limited by practicality.

Look at what most access providers call unlimited access (for dial up accounts). It's actually half the hours in a month. Since we have to sleep sometime, do other things away from the computer, and most people work outside their home, that's good enough even though, technicaly speaking, it's not unlimited.

E-mail addresses, a few other things, even disk space with some companies, can be had for as much or as many as anyone needs.

Unlimited bandwidth, hits or traffic are the lies to watch out for and should set off the BS* alarms.

* That's Bloated Statement, though other euphemisms can be substituted.

Hmmm. I don't agree with all of the generalizations, but the "unlimited bandwidth" issue is a good one.

Many of the other items that hosts offer (hundreds/unlimited POPs, disk space, etc.) are usually available - for a price. Of course, those who advertise such things without indicating that there are extra charges for them could be included in the "Hosts That Lie" category. Omission of such details is as bad as an outright lie.
