Hello,

I am currently looking for a good and reliable windows webhost for my 2 websites I'm working on. Of all the existing webhost, I've chosen 1and1 and ixwebhosting as my 2 final opponents.

What I mostly want is:
-unlimited bandwidth
-.net 3.5 since my websites are written in aspx
-MsSql database (not capped if possible)
-Good speed so at 100-500 users at the same time, the website is still navigable.

I already own my domains (from 1and1)

the plan I'm looking at 1and1 is the MS Business and at ix it's the business plus.

I might later move to a vps or a dedi once I'm making enough money from my websites.

Thank you for your time,
Blackvortex

I have used both before in the past and I'd suggest ixwebhosting for hosting needs, if I had to choose 1&1 I'd just use them for my domain instead of hosting. But I didn't have a terrible experience at either host back in the day :)

Good luck.

I agree that taking my hosting with 1and1 would make the dns managing a lot easier.

I'll wait to get more opinions and decide which one I'll take :)

Score:
1&1: 1
ix : 1

Domain is better to reg with the other domain registrar IMHO.

Never had any problem with my domains at 1&1.

There's isn't any thing like unlimited you can always find some limits to the resource usages when you refer the ToS. Make sure you go through their ToS to know the actual limits on resource usages.

The unlimited space at ix is 100 000 files (for windows).

For the bandwidth, I don't exactly remember the numbers for both.

Best if you are stuck between this two then better search and go through their reviews for both providers. The review for which host you find to be most positive then its good sign to go with them.

I already did this part and both were pretty much equals over rating. But yeah I'll check again to see if some websites did reviews update, etc.

I would caution you and just advise to set a level of expectation with any provider. In my opinion, 100-500 concurrent users on shared hosting is not realistic. You'll simply exhaust the number of available threads to the application pool regardless of available CPU. Most shared hosts won't enable web gardening or increase the default number of threads per pool. As threads are exhausted the site will become slower and slower while requests are queued.

You're probably somewhere under 50 concurrent users on any shared platform that's not spread across multiple processes or servers. For the sort of eventual scale you're looking at it's definitely a dedicated or VPS environment and/or something that involves multiple servers in a cluster setup.

I understand your point though -- you want a plan that's reliable, provides a good level of performance and meets your needs.

Good luck -

Wayne

How much bandwidth do you really use per month?
Be careful when you opt for cheap hosting package with huge amount of resources offered.
Put yourself in position of the host and see when you would cut off a user who causes issue using too much server resource.

Yet I can't tell how much bandwidth I'll need. I've contacted both webhosting provider and both said there was no actual limit to my bandwidth (unlimited = unlimited). Most likely the numbers I'll get with the "unlimited" will help me to choose what to take when I'll move to a vps or dedicated server later.

According to me 1&1 good for you.
