View Full Version : 2 Resellers Go Down
jamesyap 12-24-2002, 03:15 PM I just found out 2 resellers (that still available last 2 weeks) have gone out of business.
1. web-x.net
2. softerweb.com
I wonder what will happen to their customers.
So, one should be careful when hosting with a reseller. Reseller ain't all bad. But since there are too many resellers out there, they will sure be some that isn't good (10% is enough). And web hosting is a very competitive business. There are many resellers went out of business each day.
Make sure you host with one that have a profesional designed web site with a large help section (good impression). Make sure they have been online for a while and they response to your email.

Yeah! Make sure they have pictures of servers they don't own and hot chicks they've never met! That just screams p-r-o-f-e-s-s-i-o-n-a-l... I only host with hosters that have pictures of four or five people standing around in a circle looking up at the camera looking down at them from 3/4 overhead... or pics of tons of Raq's all lit up...
Make sure they have been online for a while and they response to your email.
How about good reputation?
Didn't mean to come off cocky, but anyone can buy a professional template. It takes a little time to build and defend a good reputation.
I don't know who these two were, but I'm gonna guess their customers were left in the cold. Typical when kids jump into the business and get shell shock from finding out that there's actual *work* to do here, then just quit...
:D
maxhest 12-24-2002, 03:27 PM I wonder why, I bet all the customers went to the main server. That's what I would think.

jamesyap 12-24-2002, 03:34 PM so mccuem, what do you suggest?

How about good reputation?
After reading alot of these threads here, you can get a feel for who's decent, and who's not. Though it's not 100% foolproof. However, recommending that people take something as trivial as a site design as an indicator of professionalism and reliability is just nuts...
My comments were based on the fact that tons of host use these stock images of server racks and people standing around looking professional, to try to be professional. The pictures are borderline fraud in my book, but hey, that's just me... :) Anyway, I'm off topic...
I suggest a good reputation.
Pilgrim 12-24-2002, 03:53 PM 10 ways to become a good reseller:
1. Look around the internet for the cheapest deal around. Then post the details in the request forum with the subject: "who can beat this?"
2. If multiple people respond to that offer make sure you choose one that registered here in december 2002
3. If they don't offer you at least 100 GB transfer with 15 GB diskspace for $ 15 per month ...STAY CLEAR! They're ripping you off.
4. Did you try Ebay? There are some great deals there. All the diskspace and bandwidth you want. Starting at just $ 1 for life!
5. Thinking about going with Mchost or Splashost? Nononono. Search these forums. I think there is ONE bad thread about them. That rules them out.
6. Continuing on five: make sure that the host you select has absolutly no negative feedback on the board. Sure it is possible to have 1000+ customers and not get any negative feedback. Don't think for a minute that not having any negative feedback means that they probably do not have any customers!
7. If your current host has 5 minutes downtime screw him! That is unacceptable. Find another host. There are plenty around and all cheaper then him. Use one of the above rules.
8. Did you know there is free reseller hosting available? There is a thread about it in these forums somewhere. Make big $$$ charging your customers for something you get for free! You can't loose!
9. Check your hosts language skills. Terms like wut do u meen? and AIM nicks like Ub3Rm3Nsch mean they are cool people. Don't go with a company that uses correct grammar. They're gay.
10. Wait a while. Shawn promised to get his servers back online as soon as the datacenter is finished. He has great prices and you'll probably get a good deal!
Follow these guidelines and I guarantee you that your company will be one of the most talked about in the main Hosting Forum in no time!
mccuem 12-24-2002, 04:16 PM ROFL!!! Can I copy that?
Pilgrim 12-24-2002, 04:24 PM Ofcourse.
Nice signature by the way ;)

Only 100GB transfer? Get with the times man, it's unlimited transfer for $4/mo you're aiming for. Naturally anybody who's registered this month offering that knows the mystical secret to not paying telcos for bandwidth :)

Pilgrim 12-24-2002, 04:47 PM I can't keep up. The 100 GB datatransfer for $ 15 offers only started appearing in the requests forum since a week or so.
By the way: for everybody who didn't realize it yet, I didn't invent these 10 points. They are real live examples from threads I have read or been involved in on this board. Put them all in one post and they seem too stupid to be true.
Yet this IS how people are setting up their reselling business. Cheap cheaper cheapest in order to be able to compete in the requests forum.
Be honoust WHT resellers... is there a point on the list that you are quilty of? ;)
Acroplex 12-24-2002, 08:08 PM That needs to be added to the anti-FAQ :D

Reality Hosting 12-24-2002, 10:08 PM If I was looking for hosting, I would rather go with a new reseller, than a new host who is renting a server. Less chance of the reseller going under.
mccuem 12-24-2002, 11:24 PM i can honestly say im guilty of none of the 10 commandments.

Koutaru 12-25-2002, 01:16 AM sad fact is, there are a lot of people who go by 2 or 3 of those guidelines
Reality Hosting 12-25-2002, 10:53 AM Don't worry, they won't be around for long :p
wowewo 12-25-2002, 01:03 PM Site deisgn is VERY important. Yes I agree with the post about hot chicks and unowned servers... but chances are if your site is sloppy all text and funky colors, your not going to get many customers.
Reputation is very important but how to check on reputation for small resellers? I know I'm not the talk of the town but I do provide good service. So it's not fool proof. In any industry people go out of business all the time.
positivesale 12-25-2002, 01:44 PM Another sad thing is, some of the hosts that charge reasonable amounts of money and have good grammar are just as bad as the ones that don't.
Why? companies like yahoo and the biggies are very professional but their automation sometimes screws up (since they don't have enough staff for all their customers).
Another problem with the "so called better" hosting companies is that they spend way too much time talking sh*t about how good their hosting company is in numerous forums, and why people shouldn't go with the cheap hosts - when they should be taking care of their hosting clients. Irony.
With hosting, ultimately there really is no answer. Best bet I've found so far is to get two separate hosts for at least two different domains, and if one blows just use the other one as back up Temporarily use a redirect service with enom in the mean time so your site isn't down as another back up, with your second or first host (whichever is working).
Other options are getting a dedicated server for yourself, but then ask bunch of your friends and host for them. With only 8-10 people paying 10 bucks each, you can get a dedicated server. Why would you want to go with some sh*t-talker $10/month or $30/month hosting service (essentially the same thing, both have problems no matter what the monthly cost!) when you can just do that. Hopefully you can find 8-10 people though.
Thanks,
Lars

jamesyap 12-25-2002, 01:57 PM I think only those who don't know what is web hosting will only be trick into using yahoo hosting. 1st it is expensive and 2nd the plans didn't offer much. It is much like a newb plan for a beginner to play with web hosting. Learn how to upload file with their web panel, control file with their web base filemanager and even upload files from the web. Yahoo is aiming idiot as their customers. And those who only know how to type yahoo.com in their browser location bar will usually go with them when they need a hosting.
Heard of those branded host like *****, hostway? They might be able to provide good support (I still doubt) but their price sxxks. Who will goes for them?
1. People who don't know there are so many hosts out there and thought they are the only people offering web hosting.
2. Those people setting up website for their company. Why? Because they don't need to pay the bill, their boss does, so why they care?
3. Because they are established. They are so called 'branded', this make those chicken that are afraid of anything, or those chasing names stick with them.
I will never pay a single cents to those branded host and I wil also not pay to those that giant host that use to provide free web hosting like yahoo, netfirms... Do I miss one - Catalog.
acranox 12-25-2002, 02:05 PM Well, my host who is a reseller AFAIK, also hosts Anandtech, who can probably single handedly keep the reseller in business. I'm sure it helps a host a lot if they have at least one big client.
ADEhost 12-25-2002, 02:05 PM OK I did not see this question ask, Are you sure that those companies are no longer around ? the site's came up for me
Mike
